Old-Fashioned Christmas in Olde Town Arvada

I finally made it to the old-fashioned Christmas event that Olde Town Arvada calls, Lagniappe.  I've written about it for the past few years, but this year the weather was so nice and I have two grandsons to enjoy it with, so I refused to miss it!

The highlight of Lagniappe for all of us was the lighting of the Christmas tree in the town square. Before the lighting we milled around, chatting with people we came across who we knew and a few we didn't know, enjoying hot spiced cider, and trying to ignore the luscious aromas drifing over from the chili cookoff.

Finally, the big moment - children were invited up to the front, the countdown, then on came the lights. I admit, I would have enjoyed singing a Christmas carol afterwards, but maybe that's too much to ask in today's political climate. At least there was recorded Christmas music playing, which added to the traditional Christmas atmosphere.

My family decided to walk on down the street to the Archive Room for dinner, stopping on the way to check out the gingerbread houses, and pick up a fireman's hat for our little JJ.

I noticed a long line of people, standing quietly for no apparent reason so of course I had to ask someone what the line was for. It turned out to be for the free horse-drawn carriage rides.  Just then I saw the two carriages returning for the next lucky riders.  (You can catch a horse-drawn carriage ride in Olde Town every Friday night until Christmas, but they're no longer free.)

If you missed Lagniappe this year, don't worry.  You can still enjoy the historical atmosphere of Olde Town Arvada decked out for Christmas. Stroll the streets, visit the shops, take some photos by the tree, make some memories!

I write posts on real estate issues and local events in the Denver metro area, especially those communities between Denver and Boulder, as a public service. My hope is to give people an idea of the ‘flavor’ of our community, in case they’re new or moving to the Denver area.
