Lord Love A Duck - What Does That Mean Exactly?

By

Craig took this cute picture at Citrus Park Mall and when I looked at it, it reminded me of an expression my Mom used to use when we lived in England (usually when she was surprised or dismayed).  So I went agoogling and tried to find out what it means.

Duck toys

Seems like no-one really knows. It’s an old English expression that  has shown up in the works of T.S. Eliot and P.G. Wodehouse and according to the OED, James Joyce’s Ulysses but that doesn’t explain it.

It seems to have come from Cockney verbiage. As everyone knows, rhyming was used as a way to hide expletives within their colorful language. Michael Quinion of World Wide Words found it in a book from 1907 by Louis Tracy. The Urban Dictionary defines it “as an expression used when nothing else will fit.” Vague, very vague in my opinion.

Lord Love A Duck was also a black comedy from 1966 starring Roddy McDowell and Tuesday Weld (whatver happened to her): a satire of the ‘60’s culture. (If you watch the trailer, turn your sound down first) I never heard of it before so it must not have been a big hit.

Anyway, I couldn't find an explanation just seven Lords a'leaping which is another thing I haven't figured out yet so let's not go there.

Never heard that expression...until today. Lord Love a Duck! Not sure if I can say it in public or not! Of course I would likely say it after a big meal of duck!

Toni,

I have heard that expression before, because both my parents studied the King's English in Europe, as did I for the first year before we came to America.  Thanks for the research, you should make up your own history.  A

Have a wonderful Christmas or Happy Holidays for the more politically correct! LOL.  A

Makes me think of "when pigs fly" recently brought current due to Geico ads.  Pretty funny.  Now I DO want to know why we might love a duck.  Merry Christmas Toni!

Gary - I never liked duck as a meal; first you have to get over the whole Daffy thing, then the meat's a little greasy.

Silvia - it is "ducky" and I'm still not sure what that all means either :)

Will - thank you I enjoy your blogs too.

Kristin - I was born in England, lived there till I was 10 when my Mom dragged me to her home on Long Island.

Debbie - you too!

Frank - I don't think that one was very popular. Happy Holidays and Merry Everything!

John - I am making no comment here. :)

Alexandra - If I researched everything I get interested in, I would never get any work done :)

Cara - that was also one of my mom's favorites, especially when I asked for something that I was never going to get :)

Rob - I think it was popular back in the day; my parents used it all the time on me.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone.

Hi Toni, Craig took a photo of the famous Dear Ducks. They are the only Ducks that the Lord created with Antlers but he realized that the antlers were to heavy and they were always drowning. SO maybe that where the expression comes from, Lord Love A Duck. He re-created the ducks without the Antlers this time proving that he did indeed loves ducks. Well, it is plausible, on second thought, maybe not. :-)

Here is wishing you and family a most Special and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year with wonderful photos and great business too!

I'm smiling at William's Comment #18.  William, those antlers are a testiment that evolution does exist.  Evolution is simply God's way of building a better mousetrap:-)  Merry Christmas Toni.  I hope you are enjoying the holidays!
