Does Your Apartment Have a Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector?

Beginning in 2013, all apartments must have installed carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in every unit to satisfy the new State Legislation. This is not a new law, but the deadline is set for January 1, 2013. Is your property compliant with Senate Bill 183, enacted in 2010?

We have heard about these carbon monoxide detectors being required by the July 1, 2011 deadline for homes in California. This bill required homes with an attached garage, fossil fuel burning appliance and fireplaces to have installed detectors to satisfy the legislation in California. In that bill, the deadline for apartments was set for the first day of 2013.

Studies have shown that by installing detectors lives can be saved by alerting residents whenever high levels of carbon monoxide are present in a home.

What is Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. It is produced by the incomplete burning of various fuels, including coal, wood, charcoal, oil, kerosene, propane, and natural gas. Products and equipment powered by internal combustion engines such as portable generators, cars, lawn mowers, and power washers also produce CO.

The installed carbon monoxide detectors need to be approved and listed by the State Fire Marshall. Be sure to check the packaging for SB 183 approval, or go to the web site for a complete list.

There have been many questions regarding the Senate Bill 183, the Office of the State Fire Marshall has produced a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) file that is very helpful in understanding the requirements.

So if you have not yet completed installing carbon Monoxide Detectors in your apartment community, you better get going. The deadline is January 1, 2013 for apartment communities and all others.

That is up to you to choose Susan Z, maybe you know of someone who can double-check your situation. I know of an apartment where cars have backed into parking space, the exhaust from cars warming up blows into the units for a long time before leaving. (Just an example of the need.)

Happy New Year.

Susan N - There are still a lot of questions that I have, that I am not sure of. One that come up regularly is this, "Can I replace my existing smoke detectors with the combo smoke / CO detector?" The answer is not all that simple.

Tom - That's a great law and should be put into effect here in VA. I always recommend to tenants to get one if the property does not have one already. Carbon monoxide detectors are very inexpensive and it could save your life (and your family - including pets)!

Tom - after reading about a family who died from carbon monoxide poisoning, we bought several of them and installed them in our home. This is something people really need to take seriously. Congrats on the feature and have a safe and happy New Year!

Maybe we just need to get the word out Gina. Being aware that there is a problem with CO accumulation in the home, and it's danger, is the first step.

I think this device is a big help to renters out there to help protect them against carbon monoxide which is a poisonous gas.  Hopefully, all other rentals have these for the safety of renters.
