Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone

More than 30% of the world's population lives alone, and that percentage is growing daily. How is this profound demographic shift transforming the economic and cultural life of cities around the globe?

Join NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg, the author of Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone (Penguin, 2012), and Jerilyn Perine, Director of the Citizens Housing and Planning Council, for a discussion about the rise of single adults in New York, Paris, Tokyo, and other world metropolises-- and its implications for urban life as (we think) we know it today.

The Museum of the City Of New York

Presents in conjunction with the exhibition Making Room: New Models for Housing New Yorkers

Co-sponsored by the Citizens Housing and Planning Council, the Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy at NYU, Penguin Publishers, and the Architectural League of New York.

It is already here today!

Good Morning Mitchell. Very interesting story and I think this apartment is probably a good buy. Might want to move the sofa from under the ladder though.

Mitch, and I thought my little place was tiny!  I had a 9 x 12 rug in the living room that curled up against the wall.  And the "bedroom" (a stretch) was just big enough to pull out a turndle bed.

Pat, Next time you're in NY, check out the exhibit at the Museum of the city of New York "making Room - Going solo" The model apartment and high tech space-saving furnishings are fabulous.

The exhibit features a list displayed of the top cities where people live alone. Washington DC is #1, New York is #17.

I made a comment to another agent in my office that I was suprised NYC was #17. He said, "I'm not  - it makes sense, in NYC you need to pair up early on - just to afford an apartment here".
