NYC Loses an Icon - Hiz Honor former Mayor Koch dies at 88

While one New York city icon Grand Central Terminal celebrates it's 100th birthday today, another New York City icon, former three term NYC mayor Ed Koch died this morning at age 88. We'll be paying our respects to Mayor Ed Koch for a long time. He really heped make NYC what it is today: The greatest City in the World!

Ed Koch helped lift the city out of its darkest days and set it on course for an incredible comeback. Koch is most closely associated with saving New York City from financial ruin, but he was also a powerful force in the real estate industry.

In 1989, he left office having created 3,000 apartments out of 10,000 abandoned or city-seized buildings, leaving another 33,000 units in the pipeline. Over the next 15 years, a total of 200,000 apartments inside these properties were completed, and only 800 buildings remained vacant. Many are HDFC coops that I am selling today. I have been able to secure profits for my seller clients and find "affordable"housing for many of my buyer clients today thanks to Ed Koch.

New Yorkers  will miss him, but his good works – and his wit and wisdom – will forever be a part of the city he loved so much. His spirit will live on not only on the bridge that bears his name, but all across the city of New York.

HIZ HONOR, the quintessential New Yorker lives on in New York City.

Below is a great interview with Ed Koch by the NY Times.

RIP Mayor Koch.

Mitch, Ed Koch was indeed the quintessential New Yorker.  When I live in New York, he was my Congressman.

Once a week, he showed up at my bus stop at 82nd and Madison.  It was rush hour, and I was often late for work.  It never failed.  I'd be running for a bus about to pull out, and this goofy bald guy would stick out his hand to shake mine.

"Hi!  I'm Ed Koch!"

OK, Ed.  I'm late for work and you just made me miss my bus.

I voted for him anyway.

Yes.. he did quite bit of amazing work for NYC. I actually met him at a Bar Mitzvah many years ago for one of my cousins. A New Yorker through and through.  He will be missed.

Mayor Koch was one of the few honest politicians. I met him when he was running for office & you could see the sincereity in him. I met him a few times after & I knew he cared. Than why do we pick so many bad politicians. Why do we not like ourselves.

Mitchell, a great tribute to a fellow New Yorker. Ed Koch will be missed by many, but what he did for New Your City will be remembered forever.

When I visited NYC a few years ago, I had intended to spend 3 days touring.  However a serious storm blew in during the night after the first day.  I didn't leave the hotel room much after that.  I really hoped to visit Grand Central "Terminal," but just couldn't fit it in.  I need return to the city one day, and finish what I started!

Ed was the quintessential New Yorker. He walked the walk and talk the talk. From riding the subway to work, to celebrating the Mets World Series, from rescuing the city from the depths of financial ruin and more, if you want the definition of a great public servant, Ed Koch is the man that defines that.

Pat, Thanks for including this in week in review. I voted for him too. You would always see him around town. He's was very tall in person.

Janis, I met him too and was invited to Gracie Mansion. Back in the 80's I worked for the Hollywood Reporter. Ed Koch was the first mayor to hire a film commissioner for NYC and formed the Mayor's office of Film, Television and Theater. He was a film buff. In fact Guiiano hired back Koch's commissioner after Mayor Dinkins fired her and appointed one of his friends.

Gabe, Thanks, I loved his wise cracks and humor. He will be missed.

Hannah, Thanks, Yes he loved NY and the people of NY and served them well.

J Philip, Thanks, Like many New Yorkers he was opinionated but he didn't always agree with the opinions of his party.

Debbie, Thanks, It is sad but he lived a good long life and he did good.

Jimmie, Thanks. He really cared about the people and the city. He was a regular guy and spoke always his mind even if it wasn't politically correct.

Michael, Thank you. He is responsible for so much of today's real estate success in the city. Before he became mayor NYC was basically a rental market. During his tenure is when many of the rental buildings converted to coops and condos.

Gena, Thanks Yes, a foodie and he always stayed thin.

Myrl, Thanks, I remember that storm, it was on Labor day? Irene? Luckily it wasn't as bad as Sandy. When you get a chance to visit, I'll be your guide so you can avoid the "tourist traps" I know you will take the best photos.

Jason, Thanks, He really did. He even preferred his small apartment in Greenwich Village to Gracie Mansion. Years ago I had a listing in his building.

A wonderful tribute to Mayor Koch.  He was a good guy and loved New York City.  Many said/say they do, but when a man "takes care of" the city, as Mayor Koch did, he didn't need to say anything.  He showed it!  Wish all politicians took care as he did!

His funeral service may well have been one of the very best I've ever watched. Everyone had such great stories about him. I ran into him once at a museum. Love Mayor Koch.
