Dont' Jump From The Frying Pan Into The Fire...

As the market continues to be challenging, a familiar occurrence will be for agents to realize that the office that they are currently in is not necessarily the right office for them.  Some will be justified in their decision to “jump ship” and others will make decision for the “wrong reason.”

With marketing being so critical to every agent’s survival in the real estate business, those who have not blended into this phase of the business will become very weak and eventually eliminate themselves.  This can all be resolved before that ultimate moment occurs.

I’ve mentioned many times that interviewing every year is a healthy task, and it will confirm that an agent’s existing office is the right one; or it will emphasize the need for change.  If change is in the picture, it’s very important that one selects properly.

Mentoring is the key to success.  Without a good mentor, one will become stagnant.  Stagnant is not a word that should be used when describing real estate agents.  If you are not being mentored by someone where you are, you may want to start your search for the right office.  The office that will provide some much needed direction with marketing and making the phone ring.

Money is always an issue, but unless your phone rings, it won’t matter if you’re on a 100% and no fees schedule!!!  You still won’t make any money, and you will have jumped from the frying pan into the fire!!

Barbara that is a great point, I have heard from many agents who are not happy in the direction or lack of direction their agency is going in. Having a mentor is a great step in helping agents succeed

Education is the key, The role of the broker is to help train the agent to generate his/her own business. When an agent prances into an office and demands to know how many "leads you are going to give me". Red flags start flying.

BarbaraT- it's too easy to get comfortable and complacent in our personal lives and our work.  But before taking a leap be sure to check out where you'll be landing.   Good reminder.

Barbara many times agents will switch for the wrong reasons and most of it involves commission. But like you said, if they are not producing, it doesn't matter where they are.  It will just be more of the same.

Barbara, wonderful, sensible and still heartfelt advice from a born leader. How many are in your office?

I'm with a small SMALL office, but mostly I work from my home--unusual for some, but it all works for me and we feel like family.

Hi Barbara, had to suggest this post... to me it's always been about the amount on the face of the check! As the Billy Preston song says... nothing from nothing leaves nothing....

I have only changed offices one time in my 14 year career. I don't know if I'll ever try that

answer again. I don't love everything about my office but it is far beyond better than

the second place office in our area...

As you know, I changed brokers a few months ago. It's been quite a change -- some frustrations but overall, so far a good move.

Nancy.... many decades ago, I joined a small office with a very aggressive broker/owner.... we fed off each other... I was on a 50/50 split until year #2 and then I became manager and I named my split and bonuses...money was not the important thing.... having the right mentor was... we were a dynamic office... when I left many followed... I did not want them to and actually cut a few of them loose.

Paul.... I always stayed at least 10 years at every one....this one has been 15 years.....

Peggy.... nothing is ever perfect....

Barbara, I would have loved to have a mentor when I first came into the business. Unfortunately, I don't really know of any agents who do it. The only agents who truly are mentored are those related to the head agent.

Tammie.... that's not how an office should be set up....there should be a mentor/manager/broker/owner or some combination thereof in every office for every agent to use....

Barbara, This is a post that really makes since. If you are not happy in this business there is almost no hope. Interviewing  each year definitely makes sure you are in the right place. Just remember, you have to take YOU along wherever you go.
