Saint Joseph Patron Saint Using Divine Intervention to Sell Homes

Many REALTOR’S®, have their “believe it or not stories”

When it comes time to sell a house, some homeowners and their real estate agents rely on St. Joseph. The carpenter husband of the Virgin Mary and the earthly father- (step-father) of Jesus. Because St. Joseph provided his family with a home he is considered the patron saint of the family and of home life among other things.

Saint Joseph (San Jose in Spanish and San Giuseppe in Italian is petitioned by many conservative Catholics as one who grants an easy death, but in the wider world of Catholic folk-magic, he is the Patron Saint of real estate matters and home sales, and as Saint Joseph the Worker, he helps people find employment. The reason given for these beliefs is that he was a carpenter who taught his step-son Jesus the carpentering trade, and he always saw to it that Jesus was well housed.

Saint Joseph Home Selling KitsUsing divine intervention to sell homes using the custom of burying a statue of Saint Joseph upside down in the yard while one's house is for sale to encourage a successful and timely sale goes back a long way in the United States. I have used these statues to sell my clients homes and have had wonderful success. I purchase them at Saint Thomas Catholic gift store for under $1.00 and it comes with the homeowners prayer and instructions, I then ask our seller to follow the instruction and say the prayer and once the home is sold I ask them to dig up Saint Joseph clean him and put in an honorable place in their new home.

You don’t have to be Catholic to participate in this home selling tradition however you do need to believe. “It’s only a superstition if you treat it like one”. Treat the process with prayerful dignity to avoid engaging in a superstitious practice.

If you or someone you know is considering selling or buying real estate in Lago Vista, Cedar Park, Leander and Northwest Austin I would welcome the opportunity to consult with you about the many possibilities of Selling or Buying a home. Using Divine Intervention to Sell Homes.

Hi Bob -- sometimes it's just about location, price and presentation and other times there needs to be help from some other sources.  I've had clients "use" St Joseph for an assist in the home selling process -- one of the local Catholic church gift stores even has a wide selection available for purchase(and more than a dollar, I might add)....whatever it takes to sell a home...

Bob, several years ago, I worked with a Realtor in the same brokerage who had a big box of St. Joseph statues. As Michael mentioned, there's a Catholic Church in my area that sells them for a "good" amount of $$. Several of my seller clients have used this method in the past as well..

Michael, Amazon also has these kits for sale, but our Local Catholic gift store at ST Thomas has these little plastic ones very cheap with a prayer attached, they also have the kits you show.

I've had to help buyers find home facing the right direction for their Religion beliefs and prayer rooms etc. Some people feel as if their homes might be haunted or have bad spirits so I present my due-diligence to help solve the problem if possible.

I've heard of this practice, but I've never done it myself. I wonder why St Joesph's has to be buried upside down. Sounds a bit uncomfortable to me. Now I have a listing I might have to try this on.

Bob, I've had sellers tell me they were going to do this. I always say it couldn't hurt and to go for it! Sometimes I think it is divine intervention that is needed to make the sale!

Amanda, I totally agree, but if it's priced right and staged well we probably wouldn't need divine intervention but it sure helps...

Hi Bob, I definitely have some sellers who have used this in the past.  In fact one couple wanted to go and retrieve their St Joseph after the close but could not remember where they buried him.  Discouraged them from going back and digging in the new buyers yard.  Have a nice day!!

I've had family members and friends use this method.....whatever gets the house sold works for me.  My siblings have not done this at my Mom's house and it's been on the market for almost two years, but this is their gig, not mine.

Hello Roger, yes it's not for everyone and your family must not be holding their tongue right and maybe don't really believe? Then again the price might just be wrong? Thanks for commenting.

Bob, years past many sellers would bring up the St. Joseph statue and the need to place it in the front yard, facing out and upside down.   No longer, thankfully.

Bob, I had a friend that buried a St. Josephs in the front yard then the husband lost his job and they decided not to move and pulled the house off the market. A few months later he got a job in another town and they decided to sell again. All of a sudden they remembered the St. Joseph and went to find it and do the ceremony again. It couldn't be found. They went and bought another and buried it. The house sold quickly the second time and they gave the credit to the 2 St. Josephs.
