The "One Thing" Challenge: Distracting Myself

Some say it's just age, but I've got to be helping things along!  It's the distraction thing.

For the past several years, I've had the attention span of a flea when it comes to focusing on an important task until I complete it.  No, wait!  The task doesn't have to be important!  It can be anything from preparing a copetitive market analysis to putting wet clothes into the dryer.

It goes sort of like this:

I have my To Do list in front of me on my computer screen, usually in the order of what I think of as important to complete:

  • My neighborhood newsletter has to be at the post office by Wednesday, and I have to have the copy ready for our production guys tomorrow.  So that's at the topl.  I am in the middle of writing up the monthly market segment when the kitten claws my leg, and I remember the litter box.
  • OK, little Millie, I'll shovel it out for you if you'll leave me alone.  But I can't find the scoop so I have to go look for it.
  • Then Willie the Labradoodle starts to tease Millie the kitten, so I need to go downstairs to let the dog out into the back yard.
  • My cell phone buzzes in my pocket and I see it's my favorite member of the Pat's Old Boyfriends Club and I answer it.  He'll be in town next week?  He wants to have dinner and catch up?  So I grab my iPad to check my schedule and notice an urgent email from a client.  I tell FOBF that I'll call him back.
  • I go to let the dog out, but the back door keys aren't on their proper hook, so I have to go look for them
  • Then I remember that I need to check out the new listings for the client who sent the urgent email, and I go back upstairs without the kitty litter scoop.

Is it Adult Onset ADHD  Am I just getting addled in my old age?  Then I remembered the Active Rain contest, the "One Thing" challenge.  The draft I started was still in one of my Firefox tabs.  I should check it.

Over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to have more time than usual to just sit and read, and I've just gone to Amazon and ordered a copy of The One Thing sent to my iPad.  And while doing that little task, I almost erased this post that I began actually before I started working on my neighborhood newsletter - and all of the rest.

I love the old Russian saying that they quote at the beginning of the book:

\If you chase two rabbits, you won't catch either one!

Hmm.  Try to chase three rabbits why don't cha!

Time to go back to my neighborhood newsletter....

All of us face the distractions that disrupt our focus on the most important tasks.  Multitasking is easier said than done.

Pat your day sounds far to similar to mine, chasing a dozen rabbits.  After reading chapter 7 for this challenge, I am convinced that they may just have some solid advice rather than just another diagnosis of the problem like I had suspected.

Been there, done that....all too often!  I never make it from Point A to Point B without a detour all over creation first.
