Multi-tasking creates more chaos - This is ONE THING I know for sure!

The One Thing Challenge has been an interesting one for me and many others here on ActiveRain! I read chapter 5 about multi-tasking and immediately knew my thoughts about how it works or rather doesn't work for me. I also read chapter 7 about the authors thoughts on willpower and many others thoughts as well as various studies on willpower - of which my perspective and experience is vastly different - more on that one later!  Both chapters brought back memories of being back in college working on a thesis and going through study after study attempting to create a new mind boggling paper with awesome results.

Focus PowerMulti-tasking is a waste of time. It simply is!  I have been teaching this for many years and it astounds me that there are so many people - and even more so in today's online, fast-paced world that just don't get that multi-tasking creates less not more.  The younger the age the more I see them attempt to multi-task and defend their position or say to me - your so old-fashioned! Which is really not the issue!

When I'm teaching a CE class some students are using their iphone, ipads etc - and time after time I encourage them to Be Here Now and why that is so important. If they're taking notes that's fine by me (I do the same thing) but if they're texting, reading emails or going online that has to end. I've a fun little game that I play with them to show them what happens when they 'focus' their minds.  It usually blows them away when the begin to see the power of focus and the energy it creates. It's quite fun to see the lights come on in their eyes, faces and smiles!

Here's what I know to be true about multi-tasking.  If one is working on a project and stays involved and engaged it doesn't take use up as much time and focus to finish the task at hand. In fact it is usually quite invigorating and exciting and makes one feel great! On the other hand if one is continually interrupted by phone calls, texts or other social media messages (and we all know this is going on all day long) by the time one goes back to the project they have to remember where they left off and perhaps won't remember most of what they had been working on. Of course this will force them to use up a lot more time and energy to finally finish the task - if they even finish it. And from that point some people will start with the negative self-talk.  They start asking themselves how could they 'not have gotten that done' and the spiral down that long journey begins. Why they're not successful, why this, why that, blah blah blah and the cycle goes on and on and on. Enough already I say! Approach it differently and have more fun!

To end on a positive note - if you're a multi-tasker I challenge you to take a few hours every morning and work on one project or task at a time. Turn off your pbone, your email etc and stay 100% focused.  100% focused no matter what - on the project at - hand in the moment.  I guarantee that you will discover a real difference in both your accomplished tasks getting done 'effortlessly' plus your energy and attitude will be more excited and enthusiastic. It really does work that way!

Have fun with experimenting with staying 100% focused and let me know how it goes for you!

I agree Anna, although truth be told, it is still a challenge at times for me not to try to do several things at one time, but with that said, today, especially, I really focused on one of my items on my to do list and made more headway with it than ever before!

Anna- I agree.  You can say you're multi-tasking but you're only fooling yourself if you think you're doing it well.

Jimmy - well it 'seems' like fun to many but the end result is usually not fun!

Kathy - I think it is for many agents and always has been. The trick is to do it differently and stick with it for awhile and notice the change.

Kathy - so true!

I have to admit I am multi tasking right now. Commenting with my iPad and watching Blue bloods. I haven't missed a thing. I am on track with both tasks. Distractions from text messages is a whole different subject. I hate it when I am working on a project and someone texts me non stop. I would love to turn my phone off so many times. I'm on the fence with this one.

Some people truly can do many things at once... like my Mom.  But she was the exception to the rule... and she always told me to be in the NOW!  K

I do keep my phone with me and on 100% of the time. I may blog and watch a TV show. But when I write a contract, write copy for my websites, write emails to a client, I am there 98% - except for the phone calls (not texts). So often people call, and when they can't reach me, it's seems like THEY have turned off their phone. Or they have moved on, or whatever. So phone calls have top priority for me.

Anna, except for some simple tasks where deep thought is not required, multi-tasking wastes more time then it saves! Enjoy your day!

I hate it when I go visit friends and their eyes are glued to their cell phones. It's so rude. They think it's perfectly okay to play games or be on Facebook when I am at their kitchen table trying to have a conversation with them.

Anna, those dreaded phone calls in the middle of a thought and then trying to recover the flow once the distraction has been resolved. Never productive

Very difficult to be sure.  I try so hard to stay on task and finish one "folder" at a time, and then carry on, in order of priority.  Our phones are like a leash...

Anna, That is a good challenge to put out there. I think it might just change some people's work habits if they give it a try.

I'm with you Anna.  I am not a successful mutitasker.  Sure as real estate agents we work with multiple clients at a time and each are at different stages of the game (offers, negotiaion, inspections, etc). But even with that said, we can still tackle a task at a time or a "set" of similar tasks.  I "get" The ONE Thing.

Belinda it takes using the right tools for each situation....and turning a lot of things off is a good thing at times.

Kathy your Mom and mine sound very similar!  And living in the now moment is so relaxing, isn't it!

Hella - I'm not a fan of being available 24/7.  I find that crazy to think people can call me really late about something they could have easily picked up the phone during reasonable business hours.

Wayne - indeed it is.

Lynda - I had a couple of agents that 'thought' it was fine to meet with the broker and have their phones going off constantly.   Teaching moments come at various times!  Clients would hate that.  I sure would if a salesperson kept focusing on his/her texts, emails etc.  When I am with a client they are my focus...right then and right there.

Paula - we had such fun meeting you and Mark!  You are exactly as you are on AR......and way FUN!!!!  Love you too!!

Ed - exactly.  Takes a lot of time to recover and wrap a brain back around something dropped in a second.

Cara - let the lease go!  You'll be amazed how much it works (in all of life) by not being a slave to all this stuff.

Debbie - that is the key.  Start and continue doing for at least 21 days and the results will start showing up.

Charita - one focus point at a time get it done so much faster.  And yes we do juggle many files and situations at a time. Having a working system in place - and following it consistently makes all the difference in the world.  Thanks for the Tude alert!!

You hit the nail on the head Miss Banana.  Multi-tasking certainly does create more chaos.  Focus and prioritizing are the name of the game.

Hi Anna, I am a lifelong multitasker and as I get older and the number of tasks increases it is getting more difficult, after this challenge, I am going to start decreasing the number of tasks that I try to concentrate on.
