I’m not a Luddite. I am a Luddite Light!

I’m not a Luddite. I am a Luddite Light by Richard WeisserIn the past I often opined that technology has gone too far and has taken us off the path of humanity and led us into an impenetrable rainforest of technological obsession.

I often long for the days when it was normal to interact with people face to facer instead of via social media.

And while the world still had all of the problems that diverse societies could fester, life still seemed to have a quiet, simple quality that made each day a special blessing.

With that being said, I depend on technology as much today as anyone. As a matter of fact, I am typing this post as I am waiting for my car to be serviced. What used to be “dead” time now allows me to broadcast to anyone that would have a look at my diatribe.

Yes I like things simple. But I also like to make the best use of my time.

So I am NOT a Luddite.

I am a Luddite Light!

Richard, at least we older folks know how to engage a conversaiton with someone. The younger generations don't have as much practice verbalilzing as we did. Oh well, maybe they will resort to texting each other in meetings and the like! lol Sharon

My smart phone has been more fun--and more use to me--than anything else I own other than my computer, which was also a world-changing development for me. I also love my gawdgets, but they have to be useful in business as well as reasonably priced.

Richard, the way I look at technology is - it has helped bring people closer! (I remember I could not talk to my sisters in India in early 90s because each minute would cost almost 3 bucks! And now, technology has brought us closer  because I can skype for FREE - and so I talk more with her!

It's about knowing when to turn it off. For those that text or talk on the phone while at a local restaurant, stop a minute and realize that you're missing out on sharing time with others. There are so many fantastic advantages from technology that it has a tendency to just suck people into the vortex.

I concur with you Richard. I was really resistant to getting the smart phone.  It has been very handy when working out in the field, but I cant tell you how many friends I know get into fights over miscommunications by text.  I would much rather have face to face interactions to get to know someone, or to resolve a misunderstanding.

Many days, I yearn for those simpler days as well. I'm a huge believer in technology but often it just separates us from other people instead of bringing us closer.

Richard, like you I also wish for the good old days when face-to-face communication was the norm. However, technology does have its advantages.

Real estate is a people business. Too many agents do let technology get in the way of what should be a very intimate and bonding experience. I also really miss meeting fellow agents face to face over the contract as we present to the seller.

But that being said, there is definitely a place for technology, and we all depend upon it heavily. I definitely do NOT yearn for the "good old days" when I had to wait two weeks for an MLS book of listings to come out to see what was new on the market. Or driving all over town to collect keys and stopping at every 7 Eleven I passed to make a phone call. :)

I love technology too and if not careful we skirt ourselves behind our devices and forget the simple touches that are most meaningful to our clients - a live call, a treasured note of appreciation handwritten.  Nothing wrong with the supplements of great support that our technology provides, more constant touch and exposure.  It is the simple courtesy we extend to our clients and the touches that have a feeling that defines us as a professional and sets us on top of the heap of success.  Missed you and I'm trying to get back to my friends in the Rain.  Been way too long!

Luddite light is probably where the majority of us fall. I believe personal interaction is a nice thing - most of the time!
