Termite 101- Everything you need to know about Termites to How to Rid Your Home

ermite 101- Everything you need to know about Termites to How to Rid Your Home

Should I Worry About Termites?

Homeowners across the nation spend billions of dollars to rid their homes of termites that are found to be silently munching. The process to rid the infestation of termites can be emotionally as well as expensive.

Is there a certain time of the year that they are worse?

Yes, between March and May when the Swarming colonies try to get into your home to start new colonies. They only need 1/32 of an inch to enter.

Termite 101- Everything you need to know about Termites to How to Rid Your Home

What should I look for?

Termites look like swarming ants but their waist and antennas are straight and their wings are all the same size. Many times you will see fine wood shavings at the baseboards or in the window sills. Termites are attracted to the light so many times it is easy to spot them near the doors or windows. Sometimes you will see mud tunnels that are about the size of a pencil and they will make these tunnels to get from the trees into the houses.

What if termites are in the wood piles, tree trunks or on a fence? Does that mean my house is infested?

No, but it is something you need to have checked out and perhaps get rid of the infested wood on the property. When buying new fence panels, look to make sure there are not any termites embedded into the wood.

Can I treat the termite myself or do I have to hire a company?

There are some kits in home improvement stores but rarely are they effective and you will probably not be able to tell yourself. Professional termite companies will come with special equipment and inject Termiticide into the foundation, along side of it and/or into the foundational walls.

How long does a professional treatment last?

Many professional companies guarantee their work for a year or more. This is a question you want to ask when they come out and give you a bid. Many will offer a follow-up visit when nearing the end of the year to see if the home needs to be treated again. If the treated area is confined, the termites should stay gone up to five (5) years.

Is there anything I should do to keep the termites away?

Yes, make sure the trees are not hanging over your roof, keep piled up wood away from the house and do not let the outsides get wet all the time at the base of the home. It is probably not good to house our your garage weekly or monthly but instead sweeping is highly recommended as an alternative.

Do many homes have termites?

Yes, 1 in 30 are affected and need to be treated in the US.The problem, if ignored will get worse and your home may have to be tented instead.

Should I wait until I am ready to sell my house to have it inspected? No, and many companies will give you a free inspection to make sure you are termite free.

I am ready to sell my house so should I call a termite company myself?

No, usually your real estate agent will recommend a few good local companies and a report is only good for 90 days so let your agent tell you when to call.

Hi Brian,

It is too bad that we cannot eradicate them permanently isn't it? They seem to cost most homeowners a lot of money. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Kristine, They say in California that homes either have termites or will get them. I have seen a very expensive home that had it's entire core eaten away and was not readily apparent. This comes from not having inspections regularly. Termites have expensive taste because when they start eating, it is going to be expensive LOL

Hi William,

Yes termites cause so much damage and it is so sad that homeowners have to pick up the pieces. Too bad they cannot mix something in the wood that would kill the termites. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Michael,

I think the warm weather and some rain is all they need to swarm into homes and make new colonies.

Hi Barbara Jo,

I just did another one today on pests on my hibiscus and other flowering plants which seems to be a big problem everywhere. I have a bug for bugs right now.

Kristin, Our termites are albino looking and subterranean. Their wings are not that long either. Because they live in the ground we don't have to tent a house just drill the foundation or slab and put poison in the drill points.

Hi Debbie,

We get termites here but 90% of the time or more, they can use foam and do not have to tent. I have lived in my house now for 7 years and have no trees hanging on the roof so I am hoping i will not have any termites when I sell shortly. Of course, the patio cover has some cracks in the wood even though the whole house was painted 3 years ago including the patio cover. i am hoping it was pass inspection.

Excellent information for home owners and prospective home buyers. In our area, a termite inspection is a standard part of almost every transaction.

Hi Roy,

Yes in our state most transactions have a termite inspection as it is always a good thing to know before closing escrow.
