Getting Back into Balance

By

Its funny how you think you know the direction in which your life is going, then out of no where life changes fast!

Thank you to all who have sent me e-mails wondering where I have been. I apologize for not being around much to reciprocate, I promise to do better real soon.

Many of you know that my life revolves around a healthy lifestyle, I woudn't have this any other way! But something happened to change my life forever, this will be my new challenge for the rest of my life.

I'm not really sure when I started seeing the signs, around the holidays I started feeling really tired all the time. I convinced myself that it was just a busy time of year and it was normal to feel this way. In addition, I was thirsty all the time.

Since my energy level was down my workouts began to suffer, I no longer had the endurance to workout 6 days a week. I began walking more instead of using weights. I began to lose weight, I still did not worry to much, a few pounds would be okay.

Suddenly, I started giving into sugar cravings, I needed energy fast so I would seek out sugar to get it. Those who know me thought I had lost my mind! Since when is it okay to have snacks like this in the house....I would drink orange juice like it was going out of style.

A casual shopping trip revealed the problem, the pharmacy was offering free blood glucose testing. What that little strip revealed was a little disturbing....mine was over 400! I was advised to contact my doctor. Since the doctors office was closed, my sister-in-law who is a nurse told me to go straight to the hospital.

I don't do well with hospitals, I was reluctant but I did what I was told. Upon my arrival, my levels had gone up to almost 500! I was "DKA" as in Diabetic Ketoacidosis! What? I am not a diabetic? I guess I didn't really understand the seriousness in all of this, just give me what I need so I can go home.....But I was informed "your not going home anytime soon"!

The diagnosis, type I Diabetes! This is insane, it doesn't make any sense and nobody really knows why this happens. But I now must get used to the fact that I will now depend on insulin for the rest of my life. With every meal and at bedtime.

One thing I know for sure, is that I have much to learn about Diabetes. The staff at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River is dedicated to educating the public and The Diabetes Association in Fall River has been a great resource of information.

I would love to hear from anyone who has a story to share or information that will be helpful.I am determined not to let Diabetes control my life, the challenge for me will be to control my Diabetes and get myself back into balance! :)

Take care,

Hi Christy,

You would be amazed what you can do when you have too. Everyday it gets a little easier, the denial is wearing off and I know what I have to do. Thanks for commenting. :)

What a big impact this will have on your life.  For better or worse,  this may be a way of god talking to you and keeping you in touch with your healthy habits.

Hi Tracy,

I do believe everything happens for a reason...at least I do have those healthy habits. Many don't understand the importance of good nutrition. Thank you :)

Suzanne - Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  Your already healthy lifestyle will help you tremendously in your efforts to control the diabetes.  It's a part of your life - but you're so much more than that.  Stay strong.

Hi Suzanne - Sorry I'm kinda late in getting to this post. I can understand how shocked you must feel to get this kind of diagnosis. I would be just like you. It scares me that one day we are just fine and being careful in what we eat or in our lifestyles...the next fighting for our lives. I truly hope everything works out well for you. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

Hi Lizette,

Nice to see you. This has been real scary, but now I am getting used to my new routine. I have learned so much about diabetes and how my body reacts to different foods. I have good days & bad days, but I know this is something that I will control. Thanks for keep me in your thoughts, It means a lot to me. :)

Suzanne: WOW, you've been going through a lot with your health. I AM really shocked.

Diabetes is nothing to ignore. My Mom is borderline and she is always testing US--which IS a good thing. Two of my siblings are usually on the higher side....while my other sibling and I are "normal." But, as we are learning, this disease can grab hold of a person anytime.

My Mom, when she is really taking care of herself, WALKS about 45 minutes a day. She is older and is visually impaired, and I GIVE her tons of credit!!! She also stays away of the white stuff: breads, sugars, white potatoes and IT has really helped. BUT, if she DOES overdo (exercise or working to much around the house), her level drops and drops FAST...  so be careful with EXCESS ANYTHING; eating or exercise. That's my two cents.

My THOUGHTS, positive thoughts, are with you!!!

Hey Kat,

Its sooo nice to see you! This was such a shocker for me, I think I'm still in denial....I thought that my healthy habits protected me from this type of diagnosis. I am still learning and am convinced that because of my healthy ways will help me get this under control. Thank you so much! :)

Suzanne:  As healthy minded as you are, you're going to handle this just fine... And I'm sure you'll get it under control.     One little reminder, keep a treat of some kind in your purse or bag when you're out and about.

HUGS!!!!

Oh boy Suzanne, I can relate all too well.  My Dr. just called (1/2 hr ago) and told me that my blood sugar levels are indicating Diabetes and she wants me to go on medication.  My head is spinning.  Unlike you, I am overweight and I have been in denial over the potential hazards of maintaining this weight...

Ok, I've been hit with a brick...No wonder I feel tired all the time when I eat...no wonder I can't concentrate...AARRRGGGhhh, now what.  I asked her for 3 months to help change some things in my life but now I am scared...

Patrice,

I'm so sorry, my heart feels your pain. I know your head is spinning right now, but please know you can deal with this. Finding out before its too late is a good thing & now you can focus on feeling better.

When I was diagnosed, I started searching the internet for information. Also, if there isa local chapter of the  Diabetes Association they can be a great resource for you. Please keep me posted, hang in there! :)

Thanx Suzanne, I am going to a practitioner today that works with the adrenal glands in an effort to boost your system without conventional drugs.  Hopefully, my change in diet and that support will help.  I appreciate your kind words and will keep you posted
