Some pictures of plants and flowers from around here to brighten your day - Aloha from Maui County - Hawaii

a bunch of Protea flowers grown in upcountry Maui Hawaii

Those pink fuzzy ones are Protea Kings, and the spiky ones are pincushions.  These were grown in upcountry Maui, in Kula on the slopes of Haleakala - the dormant volcano.

This is Lobster Claw Heliconia - in the same family as bananas.  This flower is about 15" tall.  The leaves are over 6' long.

They grow very well in Haiku Maui, HI, on the windward side.

Ti leaves are abundant all over the island, but especially in the wetter areas.  This colorful variety brightens up a Haiku garden.  Ti leaves have many traditional uses and you can never have too many plants.

Torch Ginger flowers come in Red, Pink and White, and they are larger than their relative the edible ginger root.  They like a lush tropical climate with plenty of rain.

This is my papaya tree growing down in the garden by the stream.  It was grown from a seed that came out of a huge papaya.

Beautiful pictures. I was at the garden center yesterday for some flowers. I have a few gingers around the home and they have a divine fragrance. My problem with flowers: my daughter picks them all. Lately, she picks them and carries them into the house, where she scatters them on the floor. There is nothing like walking on rose petals.

That is amazing! I just called my wife to look at this post (she says "another one") and when she did, she made me scroll up and down the page several times.

I didn't know what the pin cushions were called.  The papaya made me hungry.  I know what I am having for breakfast in the morning.

Frank - I love the smell of the white or yellow gingers - but they are actually a "weed" in some areas in Hawaii....they grow so easily.  How nice to walk around on rose petals!

Brian - My pleasure!

Charles - Well I'm glad to make both you AND your wife happy today.

Randy - I think their real name is Banksia - you were up late!?  That papaya might be more like your lunch when you get up.  haha

Gary - I have that top one on my desktop wallpaper

Trey - It's wonderful and varied, and year round.

Deborah - Glad you liked the pictures.  Yes, the pink ginger is related to edible ginger.  they have the same kind of root and leave structures, but these are much larger.  We have some edible ginger growing in a flower pot.   These papayas are about the size of a acorn squash.  Papayas come in all sizes and shapes, but the marketable ones are usually the single serving ones we are all familiar with.  I have seen "family size" ones that weigh about 10 pounds though.... but imagine trying to eat all that?

Hi Georgina - this is such a gorgeous post that I included it in this week's Week in Review!  I also 'borrowed' one of your pictures for that post, too.  I hope that was okay.......I won't use it for anything other than that post.
