Where did that Email come from? Track the IP Address !

These are the days of Phishers and Spammers.  How many of those emails have you received from folks wanting to "do business with you"?  All you need to do is provide them with your Bank Account #, PIN, Middle Initial, etc.

Why just last week;  - I won 2 Million British Pounds in some lottery....  - Had not 1 but 3 Notices from the IRS, that I have overpaid (yeah right) and they wanted to "Rush" me my refund! ....    - I even had the Personal Assistant of Aristide, the former President of Haiti.  He needed me to help the former President with transferring some "funds".

Lucky me!  Everyone wants my help!

Then we have those folks who answer our Craigs List Ads.  Do you know how many Drs want to rent or buy my places in DC?  It is incredible.  All they want to do is wire some money to me!

BUT TODAY..... a New one.....   LOOK - It's a contact Email from Active Rain !!!

However... an alarm sounded in my head.  Some one wants to discuss using my services  ASAP.  I needed to contact them via their email address.

Hmmm....

But wait - all E Mails from Active Rain show the IP Address at the bottom....

What is an IP Address?  Well the long version is here.  The short version... it tracks where the computer is that sent the email.

There is a great tool I found (I am sure there are others - but here is one I use):     IP Tracker

When I keyed in the IP Address provided by Active Rain Guess What?  It came from:

ISPAVISONET, ISP Cote d'Ivoire
CountryCote d'Ivoire Cote d'Ivoire

Well, I will have to pass on helping out another person from the Ivory Coast.  I am sure I have won another lottery!

IF you are not sure where something is coming from.... Track the IP address.... It may save you some future Spam or a headache!

James, you mean I'm not the only one who has won the lottery or promised a 25% commission for transferring $40 million from Nigeria? Thanks for the IP Tracker link.

Good Post!

James - These guys are everwhere it seems. Everyday they thinks up new ways to deceive people. I wish there was a service that actually could tell you the name and address of the person. Now that would be interesting!

Hi James,

Interesting post.  I get email from different credit unions from all over that I have never had accounts with.  I went to the IP Tracker website--is this free (as it looks) or is there a charge?

James

Isn't it amazing the lengths some people go to?

I get emails where people want to give me 20 million.

Man, what a farce that is. They probably live down the block, and don't have to flee their third World country.

As Bill said above- I wish tracking the IP address could also give the name and address.  But, I guess it is something called "privacy".

Thanks for info on that IP tracker.  I can almost fall for those from the IRS offering me a mere $178.  I'm surprised by the small sum.  Good blog

James, you were not the only one to get that email. I guess reading them at 8 am in the morning in not a great thing.

JAMES - If more of us took these ivory coast offers seriously, we could stop practicing real estate and just start collecting checks (LOL).

James - I get those too and must admit, it really upsets me when the spammers get to us through ActiveRain - it is such a violation!

How much is my Petworth DC House Worth?

Just remember james who you are going to split the 2 million dollars with? I have and will always be your best friend. LOL. I can't stand spam. Do people really expect you to give them their bank account number and pin number. I just don't get it anymore. This is a good reason why you should just say no to drugs. And thanks for teaching about the IP Address. Great information.

I had no idea you could get that much information from an IP address and you are right we get those crap e-mails everyday. Good to know we have yet another tool to help us track fraud!

Thanks for sharing,

Nice little tool and a good use for it.  I have used this site http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation to see where visitors to my website are coming from.
