San Diego Incomes--and a Few Surprises

San Diego Incomes

As a San Diego Realtor, I am frequently asked about income demographics in San Diego County–and find it handy to have a chart (or at least a cheat sheet) for reference.

The one below provides more than a few surprises, courtesy of the San Diego Business Journal (one of my favorite local reads), which provided this data last summer.

We found it surprising, for example, that Carlsbad outranks Encinitas and that Poway beat out Coronado. Would you have guessed that Oceanside would best San Diego? And few should be surprised that tiny Del Mar beat out them all.

Of course, Rancho Santa Fe and La Jolla were not included, as Rancho Santa Fe is not an incorporated city, and La Jolla is part of the City of San Diego.

Click to see this comparative chart of median family incomes in San Diego County --along with population counts.

Good info Roberta.

The question is, are the incomes in line with what it takes to qualify for homes in those areas.

That's the disconnect in my area.

I was born and raised in San Diego and left at 23,  I dont think I can ever move back Im price shocked since moving South East.  The home I last lived in San Diego I sold for 195,000.  My friends tell me that home is now worth over 700,000.  I could die, should of kept that one as a rental!  Ill still come visit.

Lenn: Home prices in many San Diego communities have plummeted (we're even seeing some homes in the $100's!), which opens doors for buyers who couldn't afford anything in the past. The Catch 22 comes when lenders have tightened standards so much that even the most qualified buyers are having problems buying unless they have substantial down payments.

So yes, we still have a problem qualifying buyers for homes in San Diego. Thanks for stopping by!

DeeDee: OUCH! At the same time, we drool over home prices and lovely architecture in the Southeast.

Hi Roberta - As always, you do a great job.  I love the graphic of the dollar sign in the sand.  It would be interesting to keep an eye on this metric!  SDBJ is a great resource.

Sharon: And as always, you are most kind!  This is an interesting metric, and is likely less volatile than real estate prices:-)
