Please hold

 

 Watching Sunday Morning this morning (absolutely love that show!), I learned that March is National On Hold Month, if you can imagine such a thing.  "Please hold, your call is very important to us!"  Yeah, right!   This holiday was adopted by AudioMax in 1994.

Tired of waiting on hold?  Gethuman provides a list of companies that have a way to get a human when you make a call, and tells you how to do so.  

So, are your callers put "on hold", and how pleasant do you make it for them if so?

Hey, Tricia from TX -

You know, I think most folks these days are used to being placed on hold - if the wait is not extensive, and the eventual customer service rep they get is pleasant, and helpful.  Problem is, when they are NOT!

It really irks me when you can't opt out for a human being, or those annoying voice-actuated systems that you have to navigate through.  The on-hold commercials are painful as well.

What I do now is place my phone on speaker phone, and go about my business until they answer.  It seems the olden days of mom-and-pop corner businesses are going by the wayside.  You agree?

Call or stop in anytime!  And - don't forget to VOTE this Tuesday - very historic election!

Nice post Tricia and very good information. I'm going to try it. I spend a lot time on hold. I probably could sell another home in the time I waste.

Nobody on hold at our firm.  There is a real live person answering our phone during our business hours.  We try to keep the personla touch at our office.

Dean, I agree that it looks that way, but I'm seeing some resurrecting of the Mom & Pop businesses, and I do my best to support them with my dollar and with my recommendations, because I think they're critical to a civilized life.  

Maria, according to Sunday Morning, the average person spends 900 days on hold in their lifetime.  Just imagine what you could get done in that amount of time!  

Philip, same at our office.  You'll get one of our agents, or the admin, during office hours (we do have voice mail when the office is closed unless an agent happens to be in in the middle of the night!).

100% of my clients that have invested in customer service training have a live person answer the phone during office hours.  These companies range in size from 12 - 600 employees.  Companies that care about their customers will invest in people and training.  A few large companies, such as Dell, allow you to leave your phone number on their website and they will call you!!!  How about that for a switch?

My favorites are the ones that CALL ME and say, "We have a very important call for you.  Please hold..." Yeah, right.  So important you can't have a person call me?  Sure, I'll hold.  ha!
