My First Concert experience – Who is that?

By

OK, for those of you who know about my past life as a DJ for 18 years may be a little surprised by this, but I didn't see my first concert until I was 15! On top of that, I wouldn't really listen to, and didn't own anything other than "The Beatles" and "Elvis Presley" until my 14th birthday, when a friend decided to try to break me of that and bought me a "Journey" album.

OK, this album was pretty good. OK, it was great. I realized at that point that maybe I should give a shot to more artists and expand my record collection. So, over the next 8 years I ended up buying some 12,000 more records!

This started me on a journey (no pun intended) to become a music trivia buff, but Journey was not my first concert. I started learning as much as I could about artists and started really loving all kinds of music. I came across a young group with a singer with an amazing voice that would become my first concert experience. This group was Til Tuesday and was most famous for their song "Voices Carry" in 1985.

So, why did I name my blog "Who is that?" Well turns out Til Tuesday was the opening act, and being I was still in my musical learning curve, I hadn't heard of the artist who was the headlining act. OK, ladies of the 80's, don't be mad at me, when they announced him, I looked over at the girl next to me and asked, "Who is that?" She looked at me like I was from another planet. After finding out who he was, over then next month of trivia fact finding, I now know why I got that look and also why the audience was 85% woman.

It seems Til Tuesday, the group I had come to see was opening for the one and only "Dr. Noah Drake" (Rick Springfield) from the soap opera "General Hospital." I think I may have been the only person in the audience to not know who this guy was! Here is the big song that he played that I admit I liked, but still didn't know who he was until about 2 days later when I had a good female friend catch me up on who and why this guy was so popular.

Did, I have fun at this concert, you bet! I was a little embarrassed that this was my first concert, in the time line and the type of music I enjoyed prior and since, but I won because of music trivia, so I guess that makes it alright. "NO" I don't remember what the question was that won me the tickets, but who cares it was 25 years ago! I've since gone on to see much better concerts, thanks to my music trivia, including "Kiss", "Paul McCartney", "Cheap Trick", "Peter, Paul & Mary" and yes "JOURNEY"!

Todd, I also loved Til Tuesday!  Yes, I am an 80's girl, and am reminded of that when my teenage kids look at my pictures and ask what kind of hairstyle was that?

My first concert was REO Speedwagon and then the Cars, Van Halen & The Scorpions (real headbanger music of the 80's)...remember them?  I can't remember the lead guitarists name from the Scorpions, but I still have his guitar pick.  Brings back many memories, thanks.

I was just singing "Voices Carry" along with the radio the other night with my long-suffering, infinitely patient (not) 15 year old daughter in the car.  What a treat for her (not)!  But I love that song!   Don't worry about Rick Springfield -- guys may not want to admit it, but they love "Jesse's Girl."

Todd - I'm so old I have no clue who Til Tuesday is!  Why is your print in your blog so small all the time? It's very small for my old eyes to read!Hello

Hi Todd, Glad you had fun.  It's been a while since I'm attended a concert.  As I get older, I prefer to watch the concerts TV.

"Voices Carry" was a very emotional song for me - broken relationship, immaturity and all that rot.

It's hard to go wrong with 80's music, IMHO.

This explains the Kool-aid. I admit it, I was a little worried about you. Now, I'm a LOT worried about you :))  J/K

But Journey, I can live with. I've seen them in concert and sat so close I could see that Steve Perry irons his Levis! The guy can wail!

Todd, Ok here goes..The first group I ever saw live happened at a new place called a supermarket in the bay area. There were these guys setting up some equipment on a flat-bed truck in the parking lot. My parents were in the store ,so I walked over to see what was going on....It was Richie Valens singing "come on ,lets go" in early 1957. He just blew me away. I was 10. About a month later, I saw Elvis at the Cow Palace and never stopped enjoying being part of a live experience. Have seen thousands of groups since those early days...And so it goes.

Lisa - I have to admit there were a lot more concerts I would have loved to call my first, like 5th row Paul McCartney, but I just wasn't so lucky!

Jason - Did he show up on stage, like he did here in Portland for her concert? Rowdy Roddy Piper from Portland and owned a transmission shop as well as wrestled, so when she cam here he came up on stage with her. (Wife saw the concert not me - she didn't know he was from here or about the transmission shop)

Laura - Klaus Meine was the lead singer of the Scorpions and the Rudolf and Michael Schenker were the start of this band, but in 1972 they opend for a group called UFO, Micheal left the band to join UFO and the rest is history. (Michael went on to have some great solo albums) Yes, I am a rocker! Have met Gene Simmons of Kiss along with a others, Cheap Trick, Slaughter, Vinnie Vincent, just to name a few.

Lee - I don't think she has been here in awhile, but I did love her last album, she has such a great voice!

Elaine - It was actually a good song, I just had no clue who this guy was when I went to the concert! As for your daughter... OH SO SORRY (NOT) I love it when every once in awhile from the back seat you catch them singing along also. (Now that is fun)

Mary - I don't know why the print is so small, I will have to try to figure that one out, because on my screen it is huge!

Kay - I know how you feel, the last concert I went to was Paul McCartney about 3 years ago.

Fran - OK, The Air Supply story was funny! I hope they got the tickets for free! I tortured my dad and took him to a Kiss concert, when I came up with two extra tickets. He was the coolest teacher at school the next day when he told the kids what he did the night before.

P.S. - Give a little credit to "The Tijuana Brass"

Todd - Ah, how to spend the big bucks! I still am convinced the making videos is what killed Billy Squires Career.

Candy - They were a two hit wonder, but Aimee the lead singer had an amazing voice and now does some great solo work!

Kim - You got to see Richie Valens and Elvis? I am so jealous! The closest I've ever gotten to Elvis is I used to work with someone who played guitar for him before he got big, but he himself went on to be put in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. Rudy "Tutti" Grayzell, given that name by Elvis!
