Rim Fire Update

Today is day 18 of the Rim Fire. Crews have made amazing progress on this monster fire (235,841 acres). Today there are blue skies on the mountain and that is a welcome sight! We have been impacted by a tremendous amount of smoke for over a week. UnfPaper Cabin Ridge on August 23,2013ortunately, the smoke has settled in Yosemite Valley, Foresta and other areas due to shifting winds. Tuolumne County schools are reopened due to improved air quality.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s office lifted the evacuation advisory for Ponderosa Hills and communities east, along the south side of Highway 108 up to Pinecrest. Highway 120 at the Yosemite National Park boundary west to Buck Meadows is still evacuated. All mandatory evacuations and evacuation advisories were lifted in Mariposa County also. Residents are asked to remain vigilant and prepared if fire conditions change.

This morning the fire was 75% contained! The weather has been cooler the last couple days allowing firefighters to gain ground securing fire lines. Relatively slow growth of the fire in the past two days also helped crews. Full containment is expected on Sept 20, 2013.

Dozer crews have finished construction of massive fire breaks behind the Highway 108 communities. The highway is busy today with heavy equipment headed down the hill. Wildland fire crews are north of Cherry and Eleanor Lakes monitoring and containing the spread to the rocky terrain. There are some burnout operations planned in Yosemite along Tioga Road. There are hand crews and dozer crews constructing lines south of Harden Lake in Yosemite. If you are wondering about the Sequoia Grove in Yosemite - crews have been protecting them since the fire crossed over into the park (but Sequoia trees actually like fire just not rip roaring ones).Rim Fire perimeter map Sept 3

The black lines on the map are contained fire lines. The red area is Yosemite National Park. The three lakes surrounded by the fire are from top Cherry Lake, Lake Eleanor and Hetch Hetchy.
