Snook Season Is Open Again On Florida's Gulf Coast

Snook season has been closed on our coast of Florida for three years now, after the great freeze that killed thousands of the fish. Naturally, when they re-opened snook season this month it was to every fisherman's delight!

snook season is open again

Snook fishing requires not only a fishing license but also a special snook stamp, which costs extra. My fishing license expired three weeks ago and my next birthday is in October. Once I turn 65 next month, I no longer need a fishing license so I opted not to fish until my birthday comes. Seeing that snook on Ronnie's line made it really difficult but I know the laws and did not want to break the law or get a stiff fine! So I only grabbed the net and helped Ronnie land this beautiful fish.

It measured a fraction of an inch under the maximum allowed length of 33". The maximum and minimum sizes vary from location in Florida, as do the moratoriums and season length. It is always best to check on the local rules if you are visiting an area since there is an excellent chance that they are not the same as the part of Florida you live in.

Ronnie brought it home and filleted the fish downstairs rather than bringing the whole fish upstairs into the kitchen. He then dug nice deep holes in my veggie garden and buried the remains - including that enormous head! My blueberries are near by and I am sure they will love the nutrients from those fish!

It was a good dinner last night - panko breaded snook and pan fried potatoes and onions! With all that fish, we will be having fresh snook for several more days - and he is out fishing again today!!!!

Hi Barbara Jo,

I do not recall ever eating snook but it sounds and looks wonderful. Must be nice to go out catch your dinner. Fishing in Florida and abiding by the law is fairly complicated based on what I have read in your blogs.

I did not know that after 65 a license is not needed.  Learn something new everyday.
