Oprah Helped Me Potty Train My Daughter!

By
Home Stager with Mothers Fighting For Others

Two weeks ago, I was going insane.  Potty training is a horrible, horrible thing. To me, it's got to be like Basic Training. You can prepare as much as you want, but you will never understand the true pain one goes through until you have been in the trenches. The book, Army Basic Training: Be Smart, Be Ready describes an insider's view of Army Basic Training. The Table of Contents are as follows:

  • Get Physically Fit
  • Get Mentally Fit
  • The Phases Of Basic Training
  • Drill Sergent Advice

I wish I had a handbook like this for Potty Training. Maybe I should of just followed the author's advice. Get physically fit = get lots of sleep. Get mentally fit = get lots of sleep. The Phases of Basic Training =  screaming, crying, cleaning urine off the floor, actually urinating on the toilet, doing the PeePee On The Potty Dance, and the dolling out of  M&M's when it finally does happen. And lastly, Drill Sergent advise = get advise from friends, doctors, but most importantly, OPRAH.

Congratulations and great post!  My second thought when I found out I was pregnant with our second child was, "Oh, no.  I have to potty train someone else."  No lie.  (My first thought was, "How did THAT happen???" because we were not trying to get pregnant, and in fact were trying NOT to, but sometimes the best gifts in life are the ones you didn't ask for.)  Congratulations, I know this is a big deal.

My mom taped the Dr. Phil episode about potty training and made me watch it.  I did everything he said multiple days -- no help.  Of course Dr. Phil and Oprah are totally different folks!  I can honestly say that each child is different and they'll go when they actually can.  I remember some kids in school still pee-peeing in their pants when they giggled.  Some kids have a control problem.  MINE DOES!!!  She really tries, but she's 4 and so, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it MAY work out before kindergarten.

But thank the good Lord for pull-ups.  Otherwise, I'd hate life.  I think that this issue is somewhere on the front-burner of every mom-of-young-children's mind.  :)
