Kids Can Be A Trip When Showing Property.

Services for Real Estate Pros with Crescent Moon Realty, Inc. & Land N Sea Auctions.

Yesterday I was out showing property to a family of six, two adults and four children, the ages of the children are: 6, 4 and a set of twins 7 months. The family is looking for a larger home then the one that they are currently living in now. This was my first outing with this family after I did all the preliminary homework. We set up an appointment to go see some homes ----- I ask before the appointments were to be schedule if they were bring the children along, the husband gave me an emphatic no they were going to hire a babysitter. Well, Well, its time for us to meet and in to the office comes the whole family.

Needless to say I was a bit stunned. The husband then tells me that the babysitter cancel at the last minute and they did not have a back up babysitter to use. OK, I thought score one for me, they are truly interested in finding a home. We set off they take their van and I go in my vehicle. I had given them the list of homes we were schedule to see.

Arriving at the first home the following occurred.

  1. The six year old needed to go to the bathroom. Which seem to take him forever.
  2. The four year was unhappy because he could not play with the toys that the family that lived there children had.
  3. Then the twins started to cry and the mother said to me that she needed to go out to the car to breast feed them.
  4. So, the other two children, spy the candy bowl that was sitting on the dinning room table, and naturally both parents tell them they can not have any candy. Both kids decided to have a temper tantrum, yes, one of those that include screaming at the top of their lungs and kicking the furniture.
  5. I suggested switching off one parent sit in the car with the children while the other goes into the home and checks it out. You would have thought I was speaking a foreign language. The reply I got was it no problem we will take them in with us. NO, NO, this is not what I wanted to hear.

Mind you this was just the first home, and we had three more to go. So, I bet you can just imagine what I was thinking. I endured one more showing, and then I ask the husband, if we could re-schedule when they could get a babysitter.

Yes, I am glad to have this appointment over.

Some people have no consideration at all.  Episodes like this should be remembered when Realtors are accused of making too much money for too little work.

Lorraine and Loretta - It is too bad the parents were unrealistic in thinking that the children would do ok during the house showings. It is very hard for children in this type of situation. The parents should have gone alone with your fifth point.

Let's see-traffic cop, house cleaner, counselor, baby sitter, school teacher....seems we wear a lot of hats. I am glad that you told them to reschedule as they would not have been able to concentrate anyway. I may have had to shoot myself!

I have been in that situation once...it really got under my skin.  I have kids- they don't behave like that and never did.  I am wondering where the liability begins and ends if something were to be broken?

We had one showing where the little boy tried to eat the wax lemon.  Good for you that you suggested to your client that they get a baby sitter, but I've tried to write offers, do listing presentations and tour with kids.  I love them, but they are guaranteed to be the focus of any meeting.

Home buyer with Children

I will note never to use your services. Buying a home involves the whole family. If you dislike children so much let clients know you'd prefer the childless buyer. Simply offer to transfer their initial call to another agent who has many children and loves them. If I were your buyer in the situation you described you would NEVER have gotten a second call from me. I would have used another professional who wants to earn working with families. On that note I once was shown a home by someone who brought a couple of their own children unannounced to the appointment. While inside one child used the restroom and other broke something - and they were the agents children!  Kids will be kids and clients come in all shapes and sizes as do their children. Your opinion of parenting should not be forced upon the buyer!
