Gift Ideas For Real Estate Clients?

By
Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Fusion

This is a topic that I have heard mixed reviews on by Realtors.  Some real estate agents feel that they do not need to provide their clients a gift as a thank you as they are just doing their job and some Realtors ensure they do it on every deal no matter how small it is.  The Saskatoon real estate market is a smaller market with only about 250,000 people living here so I feel it is important that you do everything you can for your clients even if its providing them a small thank you gift.  As a new Saskatoon realtor, word of mouth is extremely important and I feel that when doing some nice for your clients they will be sure to tell their friends.  I have always provided my clients a gift as I am thankful for them trusting me in one of the biggest transactions in their lives.  I have given gifts ranging from gift certificates to restaurants and home design stores to flowers.  I always try to match the gift to my clients personality by like most people I do get stumped once in awhile.  I am always looking for new and creative gift ideas so I am interested what you as other Realtors do for your clients?

I often think that it depends on the client and the bond that develops sometimes you never really get close the the client  and sometimes you become close friends. Even then carefull how you spend with all the rules and possible violations in each state.

Kari, I have new return mailing labels made for my clients, and also do "just moved" postcards. I have my clients give me their address list and mail them for them. They love it. I also take a photo at closing and run by a week or so later and give that to them. Goofy, I thought, but everytime I have done this, they love it...when you get their mailing list, you can add them to your database as well!  On move in day I have lunch or dinner delivered to them as well.

Dedra-Love your idea of having your son help out. What a great idea! We have a couple of college's here in Huntsville. Bet I could find a good, dependable, hungry college kid to do the same! Thanks for the great idea!

Hi There

How many times do I wander around around Homesense trying to decide what to buy client's as a closing gift?  Now I am leaning towards the no brainers like the restaurant gift certificates, Home Depot, etc. as others have mentioned. Some restaurants will give REALTORS a 20 percent discount on the gift certificates.  Ask around in your area.

Does it lead to client retention?  I hear that some clients expect gifts.  Hmmm.  Other times they send me a gift.  Wow.  A top producer in our office has never given gifts.  As someone else mentioned if we did a good job for our clients they should be happy to recommend our service.

Yes, we do tend to stay in touch with certian clients.  I will go over and take gifts for new babies, etc.  As someone mentioned just staying in contact will keep your name Top of Mind for the future or for referrals.

Lately with single clients instead of giving gift certificates, I will take them out for lunch or dinner as an appreciation and give them a bottle of wine to take home.  I like the personal contact and the house is sold so the stress is off.

Happy Selling

Jenny

If it has been a long time home check out shutterfly.com to make a photo book.  It is a great closing gift.  If the clients are not attached to the home, and moving out of the area (military or corp. transfers) then I give a book about the area.

As a realtor, what would you recommend we give our realtor as a thank you gift?  My husband and I are purchasing our first house and our realtor has been awesome so we wanted to thank her.

Thanks,

Melanie

Melanie, can I clone you?? Lol. As an agent, I would be thrilled if my buyers got me ANYTHING! You're too sweet.

Kari, thanks for posting this. I'm always looking for ideas and these comments helped me, too.

Hi Melanie,

That is very sweet of you! I don't often get gifts from my clients, but it is really sweet when someone does think of you and get you something. My client knew I liked red wine and chocolate so she got me some great chocolates and wine! I have had people get me a gift card for a good restaurant too for my boyfriend and I to enjoy a night out WITHOUT clients because, as I am sure you saw, dinners together are few and far in between when you are an agent!

For out-of-state clients, I purchase a subscription to "Our State" magazine.  It's a high quality glossy magazine which has aritcles and  features all of North Carolina.  Priceless look at what NC has to offer!  Plus, every month it shows up in the mail box!

I recently did the family portrait.  It was special because this particular family purchased an oceanfront beach house for their family to enjoy for years to come.  What better way to remember than with a family portrait on the beach in front of their new house!

See my response above... I also have given the seller the home warranty.  I most likely will not do that too offten in the future.  It's costly and does not leave a long lastling impression!

I have a couple of great stories ... a client who bought land and will build in years to come sent me a huge package of great food ... on ice !   I was completely pleasantly surprised!

Another time many years ago, I did an open for the listing agent, and the seller came home to give me an awesome bottle of wine.   I just about fell over.   It wasn't even my seller.

There are a lot of great sellers out there,   I never ever expect a gift from a client who has a transaction from which I have benefited, but I always try to find them something they will like.   Sometimes it takes me a while to figure it out.

Great suggestions here !

I go back and forth on gifts and am trying out something new now.  Ideally, you want it personal, something they present to friends, and something that sticks around over time.  But the #1 thing is something they specifically enjoy!

You can try www.wishesandmemories.ca

This is a really unique gift idea that is pretty important in life! People tend not to think about getting a will drawn up.. and they can cost about 500-600 dollars. This site offers a Wishes and Memories Journal, which is beautiful on its own, plus a Legal Will Kit, for only $59.99. A little pricey, but if its for a great client I would say it is worth it!
I would love to receive a gift like this!

Love the comments. I have done Lowes gift cards, restaurant gift cards, bird feeders, wind chimes but love the idea of the mailing labels and the post cards with new home picture. Thanks for the ideas.

I work hand-in-hand with real estate agents and make personalized painted signs for all their closing gifts. The buyers (and sellers) LOVE the personalized and handcrafted aspect of the gift, and it's an easy go-to for the agents.  Plus, the signs are very visible when displayed in people's homes, so when friends and neighbors visit, they become a great conversation piece, which is a good opportunity for your clients to mention your name to other potential clients. :)
