This is my entry for find an old Texas church. Hope you enjoy a little history and my photo's for this church.

BEAUTIFUL 1878 NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH

                                                                 CZESTOCHOWA

This church was founded in1876 and was built in and dedicated in 1878 in Cestohowa, Texas (originally Czestochowa) located on Cibolo Creek in northern Karnes City, TX. It is a daughter settlement of Panna Maria, the oldest Polish settlement in America. In 1873 a group left Panna Maria and moved five miles north and named the city after Our Lady of Czestochowa, the patroness of Polish Catholics. They first built a small school that served as a chapel. A priest came once a month to hold mass. The church was completed in 1878 and named under the patronage of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.   Tried to get the steeple all in but would have had to go into the creek.

This church was remodeled in 1931, repaired and painted in 1973. In 1936 the community had about 100 residents and about 200 in 1970. As of today 110 families call this their church home.

The church was originally built of native rock and stone and was plastered over through the years. This church is well maintained and is visited frequently by tourist because of it's Polish heritage.

Here are some pictures that will show how well the grounds are maintained. They do not have a website. Head Sister said maybe in the future.

Thanks so much for stopping by and the nice comment. Yes, it was a beautiful church, you could see the steeple l/4 mile off the main road. I tried every way to get the entire church but my camera skills aren't the greatest and if I had gone back further I would have to get in the creek and still not sure I could get the entire church. Yes, Ceil just had to take a picture of the Blue Bonnets to show everyone they are already in bloom. This is quite a polish community with a very long history. The Sister was very kind to give us some background and history.

Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks Candy for stopping by and commenting on the Cestohowa, Texas  (Czestochowa)  church. I am disappointed we couldn't get the full steeple; seems like it went on forever. I'll do better next time.

Hey Carl, I finally made it over here to see your entry.  Beautiful church.  Nice pictures.  They really do take good care of the church and the grounds.  Love the bluebonnets.  Good Luck in the contest!!!

I saw some blue bonnets yesterday and got all excited.  I'm going to have to go out and find a big field of them to take a picture of.  Won't be long, they'll be blooming all along the highways, and in the fields.

Judi - Thanks for stopping by. The bluebonnets and wild flowers were already in bloom in the fields on the back roads. We took the backroads to Rockport over Easter weekend.  We saw many pretty pink and yellow wildflowers but not as many blluebonnets. I believe east of SA they will be more visible since they had more rain in that area. Better hurry, they won't last long.

Haved a great Saturday...happy sellilng.

GOD BLESS TEXAS!

Hi Carl,

Glad to hear you have been visiting Mary Kay and I on the Blog.  I must admit, your blog just struck the right note.  I love old churches.  The one you have posted is fantastic.  Will there be more?  I certainly will be back to see.

Derenda: Thanks for stopping by. It was fun to participate in the contest. I'm still in photography 101. I see you have met myl friend Judi Morgan, if you hang out with Judi you will be hanging with one of the nicest ladies on AR. Judi is always very helpful; don't know what I would have done with her. One thing about AR, if you do something good they let you know, if you do something wrong they let you know. Just read, blog and have fun. I'll send you and invite to join my little group. Not many but some good blogs and information.

Thanks for stopping by and saying howdy.

Thanks Ricki - It took both myself and Ceil and Liz with some good info. that helped us. I need to get use to the new camera, I'm sure there was a way to get the steeple. The sun was so bright I could hardly see what I was shooting. There were so many beautiful churches, wish we could visit each and every one of them. We really like smaller churches, seems more homey.  We can see our church from our porch and I like to hear the church bells ring across the lake.

Looking forward to meeting you at the gathering. Do you have a final count?

Thanks for the update; this is so much fun waiting for the Big Announcement. Oh my, I just saw a no name Longhorn run across the road that needs a name on his birth certificate.

Have a good day.

Thank you for stopping Anna and your comment. It certainly is a nice church with a long history. So glad the historical society has designated this church and will see that it will be maintained. If you are ever in the Kenedy-Karnes City, Texas area be sure to visit.
