A Car Guy's Dilemma!

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Realty Group MD102148

My name is Meyer and I am a car addict. I admit it. The smell of the fresh leather, the shine of the new paint, the footprint of the new tires even makes me happy. Mostly my poison of choice is performance or luxury cars. A new BMW is a great fix for my jones. But, these days with fuel prices so high I find myself more attracted to, well, uh, I hate to admit it. Ok, I'll say it-GAS MILEAGE!! ARE YOU HAPPY!! It's not just the money, I swear--even though that's a huge factor. I really think it's more about not giving more money to the middle eastern oil producing countries. The fact that they have us over a barrell literally, makes me want to do everything that I can to rebel. One of the issues I struggle with is public perception. Are there any others on this forum that feel the same way? Does a new Honda Civic say, "This guy is a very intellingent, conservative person that sees the value in buying economical transportation that conserves fuel," or does it say, "This guy isn't successful enough to drive a big Lexus."

The car I drive today is a Lexus GX470 and it's a great car. But, it's a mammoth. It guzzles gas, handles like an elephant and is hard to park. I didn't feel that way when I bought it because, well, I had a Corvette as my third car and I didn't have to drive it everday. Yes, I got rid of the Corvette. So yesterday I took a test drive in the new Civic and I really liked the car. It handled well, was very spritely for an economy car, had amazing visibility and a cool cockpit and gauge cluster. I love the way the car looks on the outside too. My wife thinks I am crazy and that I'll be sick of it in two weeks and back to the luxury vehicles that I am used to.

Has anyone here made the switch from luxury to economy and been glad they did? I'd love to know. I am jonesing for a new car and want to make a decision that will scratch my itch! It's usually about every three years that I do this so I don't want to be stuck with something that I don't like.

Meyer, I haven't made the switch yet, but the day is coming! The oil producers are literally waging war on the US (Their oil exchange has ruled that they will not accept dollars, only Euros). Just now I see that oil is now trading at over $130/barrel for oil futures. I see an electric or fuel cell vehicle in my future.

I see builders offering Hummers with the purchase of a NEW HOME and I laugh and look for the small print that reads ... previously owned by a real estate agent ... Everyone is down sizing...

Next you will see Agents with luxury Vespa Scooters

Meyer,  What I'm in the process of doing is getting a hybrid for days that I don't have to impress anyone and then using the Beemer on the days I have clients.  Saves a little money here and there!

Meyer...As a former 'car guy' ( I sold just about every brand over a 25 year career), I have to tell you that they don't mean much to me today other than transportation...My last switch was getting rid of my Grand Cherokee for a Dodge Mini-van and I don't have kids to haul around...Just clients. co-workers, SIGNS and the other c--p we need in this biz...But, enjoy your 'jonesing', when I was selling we counted on your type alot...Have a great day!

I think there are a couple of ways to look at this.  If you are concerned about displaying an image to certain people, you may want to pay the gas prices and just stick it out.  I've always looked at cars as a means of getting from point A to point B, and if others judged me on my car, that was mostly likely their problem, but successful people tend to want to do business with other successful people, and image tends to be their first judgment tool.

Another solution...keep your luxury car, AND get the economy model.  If you know you need to impress someone, drive the really nice gas guzzler.  Not worried about image for a certain trip, take the little bitty car.  Problem solved.

Dana and Greg- Definitely a good point, but I have a two car garage and I really don't like moving the cars around to get to the one I need.

Well, I went through the same dilemma.  I downsized from a Yukon to a 530i Bmw which in theory, gave me 10 miles more to the gallon...It made me feel better, I guess!  HAHA

Why in the world does a real estate agent need to impress clients with the type of car they drive??? I just bought a home and wasn't impressed with the agent or their car!

I work in traffic and transportation and see the day coming when we will all be driving golf carts if we don't get wise.  Gas is only going to go up from here!  If you want to impress someone, show them how smart you are and drive a hybrid.

the civic looks ok on the outside, but frankly, the inside is kind of crazy. I will stick to my BMW!

Meyer, DON'T buy a civic.  I know you and you will hate it in a month and wish you never bought it.  I think a better Hybrid is coming?  I think the Camry hybrid might be a better choice, that looks sort of like the one Lexus.

I don't think you need a super fancy car, but I think if you buy something that is not sporty enough, you will want to get rid of it too fast?  What about the infinity G35?  Will that work?  Does it come in a Hybrid?

AJ-

I know you are right, but I am feeling rebellious! Thanks for the input. It's good to get from someone that knows me :)

I like the reverse snob appeal of successful people driving cars that don't scream that fact from the roof tops.  And I like the Civic a lot.  Great design, comfortable, great fuel economy and it runs on regular gas.  Sounds like a winning combination to me, but only you will know if you'll be happy with the decision.

You know Lexus makes a hybred 330 Rx that could solve your luxury, get rid of the gas guzzler issue --I'm not ready to retire my X5 BMW yet but must have 4 wheel drive 6 months of the year.
