Geeks and Nerds in Real Estate

By
Real Estate Agent with JKL Realty Group, Inc.

In my past, growing up working in the school libraries, joining the band, joinging the Chess club and getting interested in computers in 1979, when they came to our high school, I admit I'm both a Geek and a Nerd!

My wife convinced me to quit wearing polyester pants and white shirts.  At age 25, I bought my first pair of jeans, and at age 28 my first pair of shorts to wear outside of a swimming pool.

Two Bachelor's degrees and an MBA later, I've become someone that my peers look to for advice in Real Estate.  I'd like to know how many other former band geeks and computer nerds there are out there.  To prove my credentials, I'm still in a community band and I build and program computers as a hobby.

If you're a Geek or Nerd who has found salvation in real estate, please tell us your story!

Jay, I'm not a nerd or a geek but possibly could have been growing up. At least I felt like one in the 50's - way before computers. ;-) I'm sure I wasn't all that cool though. Geeks and nerds are perfect for the real estate profession - never have to hire an IP to fix their computer. ;-)

I was actually one of the cool people in high school, but I am pretty much a nerd now:)

Hi Teri,

I've never been "cool" either.  But after spending 22 years in Human Resources, my real estate career has been wonderful.  I work for Zip Realty where I no longer have to promote myself because the company does it for me.  As a long-time Geek/Nerd, I prefer not to have my face appear on advertising.  I'm not a "Pretty Face", so I prefer to focus on what my clients want, and spend much less time and money putting "ME" out there, but I enjoy your "Lady in Red" Avator!

After looking at your credentials, it seems to me you can be given an Honorable "GEEK-NERD" degree!

Keep up the great studying in our industry!

I live in Canada and also Belize CA. There are more people from where you live then you think that want to buy in a  an english speaking country like Belize.

We offer a very good referral fee and are a very service oriented to our clients. Our last 8 clients are from Calgary. How would you like to make some extra income? Maybe a link on your site and an agreement for commission ?

Jay,

I have aCompTia A+ certificate,  which means that I'm a certified computer techinican, and also have my MBA. So, I guess, we have a lot in common! Which brings me to another point and the reason why I'm so intrigued by Zip realty. It sounds like this is an up and coming real estate company with lots of potential especially with today's antitrust settlement with the NAR, giving unabated access to the MLS to "virtual" or online real estate companies. This should help level the playing field with discount brokers and help consumers with lower sales commissions down the road.

Hi Ron,

Sounds like we'd be good friends!  I don't have my certificate, but I can build and repair PC's, and I've dabbled into the networking environment, setting up hardline and wireless networks at a few companies, just because I wanted the experience.

I'd like to suggest that Zip isn't a true Discount Broker.  We're actually a Hybrid model.  It's true that we list for less and offer rebates, but that's only part of the story.  We're also full-service, partnering with lenders, title, home builders and ISP's.  We're also W-4 employees, and have the freedom of a traditional model.

As a tech-saavy business nerd, I really like the technological focus of the company.  We lead the industry on technology tools. What's really great about working here is that I spend my time working with warm leads and clients. No more prospecting. No more spending money on listings. No more frustration!  The hardest part of my job now is calling people who already know I'll be calling them!

So yes, I believe the NAR settlement will have an impact, but we're so far ahead of that curve that I see it as only a blip on the radar.

Guilty on both counts, geek and nerd.

After two years as head drum major in high school and four years as 2nd trumpet rank leader at Nebraska, I ended up in Estes Park, Colorado. Now, I am in the Estes Park Jazz Band, Concert Band and the Oratorio Society Orchestra.  I do volunteer work as the computer geek doing programs on Adobe CS3 on my MacBook Pro.

Holy Cow, it's amazing I can even sell real estate.
