Here is Ronald Reagan's Former Home in East Sacramento

ronald reagan home east sacramentoAh, I remember it like it was yesterday. But it happened in 1967. When the news reported that Nancy Reagan declared the Governor's Mansion a "fire trap" and that she refused to live there, tongues lashed out, calling her a snob. Why, the Governor's Mansion, built in 1877 and purchased by the State in 1903, was good enough for 12 California governors, and many critics viewed Mrs. Reagan's snub as elitist.

Ronald and Nancy Reagan moved into a $1,200 a month rental in East Sacramento, located at 1341 45th Avenue, in an exclusive area called the Fabulous 40s. Many newspapers of that era called the neighborhood a "suburb" of downtown Sacramento, although it's located a couple dozen blocks away from the Governor's Mansion. This is a photo of that home in East Sacramento. The Reagans lived in this home from 1967 to 1975.

Although the Governor's Mansion has been restored and is now open for visitor tours, the home in East Sacramento is owned by a private party, having last sold in 2000 for $1,765,000. Like many East Sacramento homes, especially those in the Fab 40s, this residence is spectacular. It consists of 12 rooms, 7,108 square feet and is situated on more than half an acre.

Hi Elizabeth, it looks like a beautiful house. I have always loved Sacramento and I think it is one of those hidden gem cities in California. Sometimes the heat in the summer is just like here in Texas but you all have some beautiful trees and the Sacramento River. I love the area around the capitol. Our governor's mansion in Austin had a fire set by an arsonist recently and they have to do a bunch of repairs on it. It is historic like this one too. That's a funny story about Nancy Reagan but she is no shrinking violet and will let you know what she thinks.

Gee, $1,200/mo. for rent, I wonder what it would rent for today if the Govanator wanted to rent it?

Hi Gary: When I lived in southern California, the perception people had there was Sacramento was a place you passed through on your way from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe. Until I actually studied the demographics, geography, climate and culture, I had no idea what a fabulous city Sacramento is, and I chose to live here out of every other California city. I never regretted making that decision.

Hi Don: I don't know because only sell real estate in East Sacramento and I don't handle rentals, but I'm betting Robert Machado could tell you. If I had to venture a guess, I'd say at least $5,000.

Elizabeth, beautiful home - and I love the history lesson. I also LOVED Ronald Reagan. I, too, remember liking Sacramento a lot. It is so close to such great places like the river and its little coves, the gold country and the high Sierras. Have done some camping in King's Canyon, Yosemite, etc. - awhile back. ;-)

Thanks, Candace. You can ask agents in Sacramento where Ronald Reagan used to live, and they don't know. Amazing.
