 Searcy ARkansas

My friend Don sent this old postcard photo of Searcy and gives the following explanation of this Searcy Arkansas, White County picture.  Thanks Don.  It is a REAL oldie.

Searcy AR

1911 May Day Parade
If you can't read that faint caption, it tells us that those were public school children marching, and that this was taken on Spring Street, looking north toward the Court House. The court house dome can just be seen through the utility pole cross bars.

The building on the left should be the Gill House built in 1882 and later replaced with the
Mayfair Hotel in the early 1920s and  the building on the right should be the location of the  Plaza Theater later.

Barbara, it looked like the school children had uniforms too. I wonder do they do May Day parades anymore in the U.S.? You are a treasure for us with the old pictures you find.

Gary, I've never seen a May Day festival in my life.  I've never understood anything about them.  I'm glad someone likes the old photos.  Thanks for comments.

Barbara,

I don't think May Day is celebrated anymore.  Time has changed alot of things.

Let’s put this into historical perspective for a moment. This photo was taken SEVEN YEARS before the Communists took over the Russian government (read up on it and find out that it wasn’t really a “revolution” as they tried to convince the world).

Later, the Communists tried co-opting May Day as a Communist holiday, with a HUGE annual parade in Moscow, etc.

Meanwhile, the United States managed to elude that attempt on their part, and May Day was observed in Searcy until sometime in the 50s.

I have another May Day celebration at  the first Searcy High School taken around the same time frame.

I'll send it to Barbara.

Mary, thanks for comments.  The world has changed.

Hey, Don, very interesting comment!  I'll post the photos and you give us the history.  Would that be a good deal?  I think so.  I showed the picture to Jim B. and he'd never seen it!  I love the old pictures that you, Anita and Paula are providing.  Thanks.

Barbara,  I really enjoyed viewing the pictures.  You are one of the most talented and interesting people I know.  Lots of people my age don't know how to email much less create a web site and make wonderful pictures.  You never cease to amaze me.  You are an inspiration to me and I'm sure to many others.  I'll continue to follow your  blog site with great anticipation!

Thanks, Vani.  I became inspired when your daughter and son-in-law were writing that blog from China last year.  Their's was so good!!  They were talented writers.  I'm just mediocre.  Continue to comment so I'll know you are visiting!

Barbara,

I always enjoy looking at older pictures of a town......you get a true sense of the changes the "long timers" must feel having actually lived through the changes.....thanks for sharing
