How Do Cats Survive a Remodel? Take a Look at Pia!

Pia Ocicat Weintraub

I have 3 cats. Or rather, 3 cats own me. One has kidney disease, and he just turned 17. He's a grumpy old cat, but I love him to pieces. He was flown to Sacramento from Minneapolis, and he almost missed the flight because ground temperatures can't exceed maximums on arrival, and we all know hot Sacramento can be in the summer. He's lived here six years now.

The other two are Ocicats. I got Pica from a breeder in Orange County. She was ready to let him go because he was marbled, and only spotted Ocicats can be shown. I thought Pica would make a good companion for my older Somali. But my Somali thought Pica was a young whippersnapper who required too much energy to entertain.

Enter the picture: Pia. She was a breeder, 18-months-old and finally spayed when she came to live with us several years ago. She keeps Pica in line and rules the roost around here, even though she's about half his size.

Pia has always been her daddy's cat. She loves my husband. She sits on his lap every chance she gets and sleeps with him at night.

This remodel has been hard on her. Everything is moved around in her Land Park home; little is familiar to her, strange men have come into the house, and none of them is her daddy. He's gone. She doesn't know where he is or when he is coming home.

As a result, she has cuddled up to the electric knife sharpener that I have so carelessly tossed on a chair. If she can't have her daddy, she can have a piece of equipment he has touched. Poor kitty. Isn't she sweet looking?

Awww... poor Pia is missing her daddy.  No doubt she'll be glad when all the remodel stuff is over.

I am LMAO at Terri... that's priceless.

You should love my daughter because she also loves cats.  She'd down to two because one got lost but she's very prone to adopting a new one because there is a "vacancy" in the house.  She doesn't need to get near an animal shelter or a cat comes home with her.

Hi Steve: I love your cat, Thor. He looks very much like my cat from many years ago, back in the 1970s. I named him Peanuts. I'm not even going to tell you what the neighbors thought his name was when I called for him to come home.

Hi Debi: She's got her buddy, Pica, to keep her company. And she gets plenty of pets, cuddles and special treats from me. She's a resilient cat. But I know that she misses her daddy.

Hi Gary: I relate to animals very well. In fact, I like most of them better than I like people!

Hi Erin: Heck. Cats don't even like it when you bring in a new piece of furniture. Furniture needs to be introduced in a calm and accepting manner to cats. Their world is about one foot off the ground.

Hi Teri: I could not imagine being without a pet. Much as I love my husband, he's not furry and forgiving of all things.

Hi Jesse: Everybody will be glad when the remodel is over, most of all ME.

Hi Barbara: My husband didn't want 3 cats at all. He was happy with one or two. I'd get a dog except I'm not home enough to properly take care of a dog.

Hi Lena: Pia is a she. Pia is short for Olympia. She's an ocicat -- a domestic breed. She was owned by a breeder, and for the first 18 months of her life was a mama, over and over, but she retired from breeding. Good breeders don't breed their cats forever. So she was available for adoption after spaying, and I flew her from Orange County to the Oakland Airport (because it was too hot in the summer to fly her to Sacramento). I picked her up and drove her to Sacramento. She now rules the roost and is the boss of my other two male cats, although she's about half their size.
