Old buildings are amazing in their architecture. The quality and craftsmanship you find in them are absolutely outstanding. You can see and almost feel the dedication that was poured into the design and the work. Somewhere along the line we have lost that dedication, now all we are worry about is how fast we can knock down an old building and replace it with one that has no other purpose other than just to provide a place to make a few dollars and then it's abandon until the next investor comes along and knocks it down.

One thing that really gets to me is when they knock that 100 year old 3 or 5 story building in middle of a downtown block and replace it with a one story drug store or something else. It be alright if they could have designed it where it could incorporate the surrounding architecture but no they have to build according the corporate image of the stores. I'll never understand how a city will tell a resident that their plan don't fit in the architecture of their neighborhood and then allow a multi-million dollar company build how they want no matter what. Now if someone pocket isn’t getting greased then I don't know what they are doing. However, the common excuse is it is necessary for the benefit of the community. Another thing are school buildings, I have seen cities that have built a brand new school in less than 15 years begin hollering about they need a new one for theirs is old and outdated and the students need a more modern look so they aren't ashamed to learn in a school that isn't modern. Let me tell you the High School I attended in Tennessee was already 50 years old in 1992 and in it's early years it was the elementary school. I got a great education from the school and to beat it all it wasn't air conditioned. This High School is open in the same building but since I been there they have installed individual air conditioners in each room and updated the windows to more efficient one. Next thing you are going to say with a school that old isn't asbestos a concern, yes it was and in 1991 they completely removed all asbestos from it. Ok now onto the abandon buildings.

Abandon buildings are a major concern these days as they are places that attract pest, such as mice, insects and even the undesirables of the community. It provides place that illegal activities can be hidden from the public, a place for children to explorer and potentially get hurt or even worst killed. They also reduce property values of the community. One thing I like to see are the owners of these abandoned places to maintain them. It looks so bad to see a beautiful area then you look out the corner of your eyes and see that abandon building sitting there with the weeds all growing out of control, the windows busted out, and other unsightly things that happen when a building begins to decay. One thing I like to see done is to take these buildings and convert them into places for people to live. In the major cities where abandon buildings are very common, I don't see why the buildings owner couldn’t allow for it to be used as a place for the homeless. Not only could these owners receive a tax break but they could be providing a great service to the community and to the homeless of the city. Who's going to pay for that, don't the owners want to make a profit off that existing building, yes but ask yourself if they are so concerned with a profit why are they leaving it abandoned? To help them save on labor cost they can let the homeless people do the work in exchange for the living space. Many of the homeless have great skills and only need that little helping hand to help them get back on their feet.

There are neighborhoods in midtown Sacramento that fall under historical preservation, so they cannot be altered without adhering to the style of the home. I have a listing in Craftsman row on 26th Street, and for several blocks, all the homes are Craftsmans. Except for the big blue square box next door to my listing, which is an eyesore. That home was turned into an abomination before the historical preservation. When people get fed up, they can put a stop to this type of thing.
