Preparing your pets for a hurricane...

Hurricanes from recent years, most notably, Katrina, has reminded us all of the preparations we need to make for our pets.

If we do have a hurricane in the years to come, hopefully we will be prepared.

One of the most important things you can do to protect your pets when a storm is approaching is to plan ahead.  If it's not safe for you, it's probably not safe for your pets.  Owners should provide supplies for the pets for evacuation just as they do for the other members of the family during an evacuation.

Do not leave your pets behind.

Some of the items to include in the Hurricane Evacuation Kit for the pets:

ID tag, proof of shots, photo of pet, food and water bowl, water and food, carrier and/or bedding, plastic bags for cleaning after your pet, leash, medications, toys, can opener if canned foods, grooming supplies, and cat litter and litter box for your cat.

Call your local shelter to insure they are pet friendly.  Also, check with you vet to insure you are prepared sufficently should any emergency arise.

Very good advice. My mother, who lives in MS, had 13 big trees down in her yard and luckily not much more than roof damage to her home. It's amazing how many people don't think to take care of their pets during this time of emergency. They need protection, too.
