NV, Las Vegas: The Monsoons Have Arrived

monsoons

This afternoon as I left the office around 3pm and sauntered out into the 104°, I was not surprised by the overcast skies, the distant roar of thunder, and an occasional streak of lightening to the southeast..  It's not uncommon for Las Vegas to have monsoon storms during the months of July and August.

The temperature dropped quickly as the storm rolled in (down to 85°).  As I drove towards home the rain started to fall, and it came down fast and furiously.  The roads flood quickly here in these kinds of rains.  2" of rain in 45 minutes is A LOT of rain.  A couple times I pulled into a nearby parking lot and watched the cars, the rain, and the sirens from paramedics, ambulances and police as they  whizzed by.  It seemed that every corner was either flooded with water or there was an accident, or even an automobile stuck in the depths of the water.  I had to make several U turns in order to work my way through the traffic only to take another street and have the same thing happen again.  It took me an hour and a half and and half of tank of gas (well almost) in order to go what should of been a 15-20 minute drive.monsoons

I LOVE the rain IF I can stay home and not drive in it. It could rain 24/7 for all I care.  And Las Vegas desperately needs rain.  So for 45 minutes we had our rain....and although I wasn't home I made it home safely and was able to enjoy the weather as it calmed down and got back to normal

 Mary,

Is it suppose to keep raining for a while in Las Vegas?

I am tired of this 115-120 degree weather we have had in Las Vegas for the last 4 weeks. I hope it keeps raining, we need the water, but not the flooding and humidity

Mary:  I am glad you were able to get home safely.  I am also sure that with that much rain... even though it was a pain for some... it was probably very much needed by most.  Be careful...

When I visited a couple of weeks ago, the news was that Las Vegas is a town that needs much water. It's just not convenient to get it all at once, LOL!

Mary... you're right.  2" in 45 minutes is a LOT of rain.  Glad you made it home safely!

Heavy storms appear to be the topic of several posts from NV to VA.  I guess it's the summer storm season.

We just had lots of lightening and sprinkles over on our part of town but when you looked east I knew someone was getting it good!

This humidity is killing me!

They say we get a lot of rain here in the Pacific NW and don't get me wrong like you I love the rain, but we don't get 2" in 45 minutes either. (That is a bit much - glad you made it home safe)

Wow! I didn't realize it rained that much in Vegas! I was there for the first time about 2 months ago and I could feel the water evaporating from my body! It was a wonderful dry heat! We really need the rain here in TX. It is very humid...105 and sticky, but not near enough rain!

Drive safely & Stay Dry!

Mary, Glad to hear that you made it home safe and sound.  We've also had our share of severe storms this summer...lots of flooding and power outages.  Seems like it's feast or famine...all the rain at once or none at all.
