How do you find a good SEO company?

By

The last few months have been really frustrating.  I've developed my website and I wanted to find a good, reliable SEO company to help me optimize it.  I didn't think that it would be that hard to find somebody.  Well, I couldn't have been more wrong!  Now I don't expect you to give away any trade secrets here; however, can anybody give me any pointers on how to weed out the good companys from the false-promise-makers.  I have a three month contract ending soon and don't want to make the same mistake again.

Matt,

I suggest that you read some of the SEO posts in the Blogging and SEO group - there was a recent one written by Laurie Manny that I would recommend http://activerain.com/blogsview/57364/Do-You-SEO (hope its ok to link but its so good and so relevant to the question).  Blogging and how to get the results seem to be better than hiring someone for many AR's.  I am starting to see nice results as well.

Matt - I agree with Steve.  For 5 years I had two websites that generated very modest traffic.  I started blogging a year ago on a seperate site and my website traffic increased along with my blog traffic.  Then I found AR.  I'm not going to bore you with details, but my SEO and actual hits has gone up tremendously.  Not nearly what some people's have, however.  But here is the key...I'm averaging about 2.3 very good leads a week now from my blogs/websites.  That's 2.3 qualified and ready to act now leads.  Actual cost in dollars?  0.

I am not an expert with advertising but I can tell you from past experience I would not suggest signing up for anything that has a contract that you cannot get out of.
