Finally I can get some sleep! The games are over.

The 2008 Olympic Games has come to an end. The flame burns no longer. Everyone is heading home. (Glad I am not at that airport today!!!!!)

What an amazing 2 weeks it was. Despite the lack of sleep, I enjoyed all the competitions and the highlights were indeed pretty amazing. Personal favorites were of course watching Phelps do what no man has done before in an Olympic games with an amazing 8 gold medals and watching Usain Bolt "go like the wind" to break 2 world records.

Bolt to medals         Phelps

However, the scoring is not what I am used to. Granted the USA won an amazing 110 medals, but for some reason the value of each medal is not counted. It should be 3 for a Gold medal, 2 for Silver and 1 for Bronze. That would change the leader board drastically! Check out this great interactive site for the medal tally.

By the way, Britain's Olympic heroes have arrived back in the UK after their best medal haul for a century.

The team - which came fourth in the overall medals table in Beijing - arrived at London's Heathrow airport on a British Airways Boeing 747 which had been given a special gold "nose" in celebration of their success.

Cyclist Chris Hoy, who won three gold medals, and swimmer Rebecca Adlington, a double Olympic champion, led the medalists off the plane.

Looking forward to 2012 in London.

If you missed the opening/closing ceremonies you didn't miss much. Boring and monotonous. They kept doing the same thing over and over.  500 people dancing in unison is cool for about 5 minutes, but when it drags on for hours its just a snoozefest.

The best part of the Olympics this year was in the swimming pool, on the sand volleyball court, on the gymnastics floor, on the basketball court and at the track.  Michael Phelps is the greatest swimmer of all time and in my opinion the greatest Olympic athlete of all time. The US gymnastics teams fought hard for their medals and Nastia and Shawn did us proud with their Gold performances. The "Redeem" team did what we should have been doing all along, dominating the hoops. The volleyball duo of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh were once again dominating, exciting and completely entertaining.  Bolt's performances on the track were nothing short of amazing, he shocked everyone with his lightning speed and I'm sure he'll continue to do so in the future.

I can't wait to see Phelps return in 2012, until then I look forward to seeing him on billboards and in commercials all over the place. He truly deserves the success that he has found.

Ellie,  That is no joke.  I was watching the US Men's volleyball Thursday night when the US went up 2-0 with one set to wn.  This was around midnight.  It went into 5 sets and I didn't go to bed until 2:00am.  I am glad they later won the gold.

I did not watch much of the Olympics this time around but what I did see was exciting.  I am amazed at the skill and dedication the athletes have.

Matt- I disagree. I think the closing ceremony was great- It had to be in large scale to be seen by so many people.

I didn't see the closing ceremony but I thought the opening ceremony was spectacular.  I enjoyed these games but I was disappointed by the coverage.  I definitely agree with you about the medals.  The total medals is phenomenal but you have to consider the # of gold medals as well.
