Blogging Naked in the Rain

By
Real Estate Agent with HER Realtors

Whos.Amung.us Jason Couch wrote about it... Jason actually took off his blog's clothes and it's now naked in the "Rain."  My Own "Forced Perspective" - Making me think  (Members Only)  He took off his ActiveRain blog's  blog skin (the customization from the ActiveRain Blog Customizer.)  Jason's also removed some widgets from his ActiveRain blog.

I don't know if I can do it.  I love my corn and skyline... it is so, so, so... Columbus.

My pal Karen Moorhead in Michigan and I were opposed to the blog skins... when everyone else was dressing up their blogs we tweeted (discussed via Twitter)  back and forth about how slow the blog skins made the blogs go.  We speculated the blog skins were causing other problems on ActiveRain.  Maybe the blog skins were responsible for every problem on ActiveRain!  Psoriasis? Blame it on the blog skins..

Karen is still blogging au natural. Karen is not, nor never has dressed her blog up (used an ActiveRain blog skin, the ActiveRain blog customizer.)

I can't remember why I put the clothes on my blog but once I dressed it up, the thought of stripping it bare disturbs me.

There was a time before I got a new computer I could NOT even go on Brad Andersohn's blog on ActiveRain because all of his widgets would just freeze up my computer... there are a couple of other blogs on ActiveRain that were so busy with widgets that they'd lock up my old system too.

No I was not using dial up but I was / am using DSL so am not spoiled by the lightening speeds some of you are used to.  Is T1 slower than DSL? Is a T1 faster than dial up?

I have tried a bunch of widgets and long ago removed many of them because I thought they were slowing my ActiveRain blog down.  What constitutes a widget?  Are links to other social media sites necessarily widgets?  One of my problems with putting too much in MY sidebar (whether or not they are officially widgets)  is I do not want my archives, tags, etc. pushed down too low. IMHO the widget's, chicklets, whirlygigs and gee gaws ought to go below the links to the blog's tags, archives, etc.

Anyone who is geekier than me... does something like the blog search (Google Search for my ActiveRain blog)  in my sidebar slow things down?  Does a little chicklet like my BlogTopSites cause any drag?

What Widget CAN'T YOU do without on your ActiveRain blog?

Your Meez?

Your SnapShots.com?

Your MyBlogLog.com stalker panel?

Your MyWidgetBox.com

Your Music?

Your Twitter stream?

statcounterIf I could only have one widget it would be between my WhosAmung.us and my StatCounter... It would be a tough decision but I would have to go with the StatCounter....It would break my heart to not have the Who's Among.us widget... I can't tell you the thrill I get when it shows a number like 8, 9, 10 or 11...

Those who have put on an ActiverRain blog skin (used the ActiveRain Blog Customizer) could you take off your blog's clothes and let it run around naked in the rain?

Brad is MUCH better now... my tags are crazy long too... I need to get rid of lots. I wish it was a cloud not a long string...  I am going to shorten a few right now.

I love your cat blog...  I may make mine more minimalist but the corn.  I love the corn... maybe once Winter comes  I will go white and  tell myself it's a cornfield with snow.  I just hope we do not have that much snow that you can't see the remains of cornfields.

I am very minimalist on both of my other blogs... in design but both may have too many widgets.

I'm still running the ActiveRain classic look. Never got into Meez or SnapShots (even just a couple of seconds delay while the pop-up opens is annoying), and don't like music on blogs either. All of those things distract my visitors from what I really want them to focus on -- my content. Now if only I could shorten up my Tags list ...

I intended to get rid of a tag or two earlier... no time like the present.

Re tags:  I was a little concerned that if I edited a post by deleting some tags, and then re-saved, it might pop back up at the top of the dashboard.  That would be embarrassing.  I just tried a couple, and so far that didn't happen.

I plan on systematically zapping most, if not all, of the little suckers.

Whaddaya know.  My graphic is "ginseng" .... here's to an improved memory!!

people do get emails though don't they that the blog was updated? I wish it was NOT this long stupid string because tags even if we JUST use them on our blog connect our blog to other blogs...

Widgets and all the bells and whistles are nice and I used to have many of them but they make my PC run really slow...even when the page loads my new background so I removed some...every time I load Brads page it takes a while because he has so many on his page.

Neal you have SnapShots on your blog.  On my old computer that was one that really frustrated me, slowed me down.  I had it on my blog for a really short time.  I like the idea but it is one I was steering  clear of AR members who used it.  I realized the other day I don't have a problem with it now.

Customizing YOUR blog is very quick... for the most part adding widgets isn't going to take much time.

The time concern is for readers, not personal...

Maureen - I have very few widgets for that reason and ditched the customized background a while back for the same reason.  Someone told me it took to long to load -so off it went.

How can you time a blog...I do remember a site that would tell you that.  I love my cornfield.  I don't want to give it up... or my few remaining widgets...  Thanks for the comment Steve.

I have the attention span of a flea.  I did customize my blog, and I load it all the time to make sure it loads fast.  I can't stand it when I have to wait for the pages to load.  Between widgets and the customization, some blogs on AR run too slow. I don't have the patience and go elsewhere.

What can I say??  Chop. Chop.  Hurry. Hurry.

fast is good...

thanks for the comment.  I knew a Girl Scout leader as a kid who said "Chop. Chop."   all the time

On days where there are troubles (yesterday? I was not on but I know I heard people were kicked off?) when the whole thing is going slow I wonder if we are all suffering... from Widgetitis.

That is why I don't have any widgets on my blog is because Brad's blog would freeze my computer as well and I knew it was because he had so much stuff on his blog. I'm not going completely naked, I like the little butt flap, so that will have to stay. (LOL)

Pam my corny blog and I thank you.

Todd "I like the little butt flap, so that will have to stay. (LOL) " made me laugh too and I have to go look to see what you are referring to.

Melina I was not on at all on Saturday and I had a little bit of trouble on Sunday morning trying to post an entry.  I ook a bunch of my widgets off one weekend when AR was flakey.

Just thought I'd add that with the updates of yesterday and today, my customizations disappeared on their own.  That's OK, I went into my settings and deleted them so they are permanently gone.  So now I'm naked again (except for the miscellaneous stuff in the sidebar), and I'm liking it.   (I removed the stalker log (MyBlogLog) a couple weeks ago.)
