POWER TIP:  Website Attractiveness INCREASES Website Effectiveness

Yesterday I posted a very short blog asking ActiveRainers about web design, and I posted a POWER poll for activerainers to chime in on their feelings about the design of their sites.  As I expected, I got a few comments back telling me that it doesn't matter how your site looks as long as it's effective.

In a very short-sighted way, these comments are correct.  Technically, it is more important for your site to be effective that it is for your site to look good.  However I am making the argument that no matter how effective your site is, an attractive site can only serve to INCREASE effectiveness.  An attractive effective site is always better than an unattractive effective site.  Why?

YOU NEVER GET A SECOND CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION!

If I am browsing the internet in search of a product I have never purchased before, I will inevitably come across multiple sites for various companies selling similar products.  I have no way of knowing which company is more reputable since I am in unfamiliar territory, so I have to make a judgement call.  If I click on a site and it looks cheap and cluttered, I IMMEDIATELY hit the back button.  Why?  Because if the company doesn't care enough to present itself well on their website, why should I assume they will care enough to provide a decent product?

If I had to choose one or the other, yeah, I guess I'd pick effectiveness over attractiveness.  But so often, attractiveness is important in grabbing the attention until effectiveness can take over and keep that attention.  There are so many different ATTRACTIVE AND EFFECTIVE real estate webiste choices available, why are you choosing one or the other?

The bottom line is this:  Even if you think your website is effective... just think how much MORE effective it might be if it looked a little better!

I am going to go to the most eye catching site definitely.  Today I am taking the rainy day to work on my site.  We have A LOT of agents in our area.  We are a transient area so many people look for their agent before getting here.  You have to catch their eye because they are a click away from a thousand more agent sites in the same area.

I believe that an attractive site is important.  Easy navigation helps too.

However, IMO, the site has to be found to be effective.

Linda:  Exactly!  The competition can be fierce, especially in a transient area where the clients are not a result of direct referrals.  An eye-catching site sets you apart from a lot of other agents who don't think the "look" is important.

Lenn:  I completely agree.  An attractive site is important, but it can only take you so far.
