Dog calls 911 to save owner!

buddyIn the latest in my mini series of animal stories, comes the tale of Buddy the German Shepherd who called 911 and started barking down the phone to alert operators to the fact that his owner was having a seizure!

According to Sky News (which also supplied the picture) Joe Stalnaker adopted Buddy as an eight-week-puppy and trained him to use the phone if he began to have an attack.

Mr Stalnaker, of Scottsdale, Arizona, has suffered seizures for ten years after suffering a head injury during a military training exercise.

On the tape of the 911 call, Buddy can be heard whimpering and barking as the operator continues to ask if the caller needs help!

Police were dispatched to the home and after about three minutes Buddy can be heard barking loudly as the officers arrived. According to records, Buddy has successfully made two other 911 calls!

Sergeant Mark Clark, of Scottsdale police, said Mr Stalnaker spent two days in a hospital and recovered from the seizure. "It's pretty incredible," Sgt Clark said. "Even the veteran dispatchers - they haven't heard of anything like this."

The house address is now flagged in the 911 computer system with a notification that a trained dog might call 911 when the owner was incapacitated.

Simply amazing!!

Simon, talk about a life line. I think I saw this on the news last week. We all should have a pet as such.

I heard about this and thought it was amazing.  I am glad the 911 officer did not think it was a prank, and sent someone out.

Simon, I agree with everyone else... this is an amazing story.  Now my little beagle... I don't think he would do that unless there was a treat involved.

My dog calls 911 when she is hungry.  I know a dog that can open doors and all sorts of other things to help a handicapped man.  They say the training cost over $10,000!

I've heard of stories like these.  I've often wondered why they don't give 911 a heads up before hand in case they don't believe the barking dog or the baby on the other end, as I've heard stories of babies and toddlers being trained early to dial 911 also.  Good to hear they added him to the system, and a big GOOD JOB to the dog!
