GILLETTE CASTLE, EAST HADDAM, CT

By
Real Estate Agent with Johnson Real Estate, Inc.

Fall is a beautiful time to go for a drive and take in all the fall foliage.  While driving in East Haddam, CT you might wish to check out Gillette Castle. The late actor and Connecticut native William Gillette, who protrayed Sherlock Holmes on stage, spent more than one million dollars to build this castle at the turn of the century at the top of Seven Sisters.  It was closed for 3 years for maintenance and is now open through Columbus Day from 10am to 4:30pm.  This castle boasts 24 medieval style rooms to explore, along with hiking rails, and breathtaking views.

Parking and hiking is free, but there is a nominal fee for touring the castle.  Ages 13 and up is $5.00; 6 to 12 is $2.00; ages under 5 years of age are free.  To keep the prices down no charges are accepted, only cash.

Valerie I was there before they renovated it, and I really enjoyed seeing it then.  I bet it would be worth going back and seeing it again now.

George.. I have been in over 20 years.  When I went last it was dark and dreary. I think it is time to revisit it, especially since it has been renovated.

Hey Valerie - Wow that post takes me back in time.  I remember visiting Gillette Castle as a child and still have wonderful memories of the castle and the views.

Teresa.. I wish schools would do more field trips.  I loved this as a child.  It seems that with liability issues and sue happy people, field trips like this just don't exist anymore.  It is up to the parents to take children.

Donna.. Maybe you should bring your granddaughter to it.  You can remember the old times and make new ones too.  It is a win-win situation.

Laura.. I went to Gillette Castle over 15 years ago.. at that time I didn't have my camera or care that much about castles.. not the way I do now.  If I do go back, I'll take some pictures and post them.  Thanks for mentioning that.. wouldn't have thought of it.

I hear they decorate the Castle for Christmas.  I live so close, I should take my kids to check it out this year.  Thanks for reminding me of it.  Regards.
