"The Name Game" - The SEO of Blogging (Simple, Effective, and Overlooked)

The following is yet another article in a series that is derived from my notes taken during Dave Taylor's session at BlogWorld 2008 entitled Ten Things You Need to Know About Search Engines & Find-ability.

"The Name Game" - The SEO of Blogging (Simple, Effective, and Overlooked)

seo-of-blogging-naming-your-images

One of the most overlooked elements of a well-crafted and well-searched blog post is incorporating good, relevant images. You'd be amazed at the amount of traffic being generated by people who are looking for pictures that convey a sense of the community they're interested in.

One of the more entertaining yet meaningful suggestions that Dave Taylor emphasized during his session was to 'leave a trail of clues' for the Search Engines, meaning that by employing all of these various elements in your blogging strategy, it serves to reinforce their combined relevancy to your content, thereby enhancing your overall search ranking.

One such element that is simple, effective, and typically overlooked, is naming your images.

Let's say that you've just published an article on a new residential development in your local market, Harbor View Estates. You went out and took some great shots of the area, and have imported them into your blog post. When the spiders crawl your page and come across an image, chances are this is what they see:

<p>Introducing a stunning new residential development, Harbor View Estates, situated along a picturesque bluff overlooking Seagull Bay and the adjoining harbor community of Tidewater.

<p><img src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/4/5/6/7/3/DSC3594039.jpg" height="221" alt="" style="margin: 5pix; float

Now, by naming your images, you've effectively increased your keyword density, and have made the image relevant to your content:

<p>Introducing a stunning new residential development, Harbor View Estates, situated along a picturesque bluff overlooking Seagull Bay and the adjoining harbor community of Tidewater.

<p><img src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/4/5/6/7/3/DSC3594039.jpg" height="221" alt="harbor-view-estates-kingston-wa" style="margin: 5pix; float

When publishing articles to your ActiveRain blog, you can name your images using the Image Editor, and entering your keyword-enriched name into the Image Description box. You can also enter a 'Title' as well that will show up when people scroll over the image.

Prolific Blogger, Steve Scheer, of RE/MAX Masters in Denver CO, recently published an article entitled: "Is Google Having A Sudden Love Affair In Regards To Traffic From Google Images?" In this article Steve shares a literal 'explosion' of traffic to his blog coming through Google Images. This hefty increase in valued traffic can be directly attributed to Steve simply taking the time to name his picture files. These names include good, relevant geo-targeted

Richard:   Knowing Google, I would venture to say they leave no stone image unturned. No doubt your images are indexed and added to their Google Image searches. It's all interrelated. Just one more way for potential clients to find you.

Elizabeth:  Glad to hear your Mom is doing better! I find that post-it notes on my monitor works wonders! It takes time and effort to learn good blogging habits, but eventually then become second nature. Take two aspirins and call me in the morning!

OMG, Rich. I actually remembered this word for word. What a great name game?

I have found that you are exactly right about the photos! I use to "never" bother with it. I do now find that is is much smarter to take the time. Google does love it. We have key words to fill the blanks the bots would see. They give us an extra boost for doing it right.

Thank you for the advice. It's great. Later in the rain~deb deb bo beb banana fanna fo feb, fe fi mo meb...deb!

ps. you know spell check didn't work for this one!

One other benefit of having alt tags (that I didn't see mentioned) is that they are usually picked up by screen readers for visually impaired browsers. By entering these alt tags, you're are creating a more accessible experience for a greater number of potential clients.

I read this early on when I started out on AR.  I'm not sure how helpful naming my photos has been for my posts, but I'm sure it hasn't hurt.

Rich... rhis is interesting and I have read this before... question... do you know if I have a specific picture, but if I tag it FHA, while not naming the actual picture... will this also help?  Kind of like what you are talking about, but since I don't blog location and subdivisions and such... that this would be the same?  thanks in advance..

RIch - a great reminder, and good informaiton for those who are not aware of the value of naming their pics. I always do now and when I go back to an old post for linking to it, etc. I always check and then add titles since I didn't know to do so for a long time. No way do I have time to go through every post and clean them up but bit by bit I will hit many of them.

Now if I could just find time to do some more with my Flickr photos life would be better.

Rich I was talking to one of my brokers the other day about the aggravation I feel with the company website and inability to title/tag images.

I think I'm going to send him to read this.  You explained it all so much more clearly than I did!  Thank you very much :-)

Rich - Thanks for the mention.  I enjoy your series as you can pretty much tell, for me, posting local is where it is at.  Making the most of building relationships locally and showcasing these businesses and places through every opportunity, be it words or images or links or tagging, has really helped maximize my online marketing potential.
