It's true only if I say so

Recently I was reading an entry at Wikipedia that had me really puzzled because the text of the entry had absolutely nothing to do with the title of the entry. I didn't know what was going on until I went to edit and correct the entry for them. That's when it hit me!

The cool thing about Wikipedia is that it is, so to speak, the people's encyclopedia. That means that when a special event happens, such as a natural disaster, or the death of a public figure, you can rush over there and edit the entry to update it, making you feel like you've accomplished something and helped society.

However, if it's the people's encyclopedia, that also means that it's maybe a little more susceptible to errors than, say, the Encyclopedia Britannica. Granted, Wikipedia has editors and reviewers who approve entries and significant edits, but there's still a time delay, just like there is here at Active Rain in getting our points sometimes (LOL).

So remember, just because it's in Wikipedia doesn't necessarily mean that it's correct and the absolute truth. Verify with a second source if the information is critical to what you're doing. As I heard some comedian on The Comedy Channel say (loosely quoted),

"The best thing about Wikipedia is that anyone can edit it. The worst thing about Wikipedia is that anyone can edit it."

It's true only if I say so.

Thanks, I didn't realize that.  You have to be careful when using their definitions then.
