Creating a Neighborhood or Community page on Facebook

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty - Nest Atlanta Team

I've been reading some fantastic posts about creating your business page on Facebook in order to reachFacebook out to more than 55 million users (and potential home buyers and sellers!), but how about expanding your visibility and creating a community group on Facebook?

I created a new group for my neighborhood, Oakhurst in Decatur GA, and have had some wonderful feedback from my fellow neighbors.  Its a great way to get your name out there as you promote local events, fundraisers, homes for sale, real estate market data... and even a garage sale or two!  As the "officer" of the group, Facebook allows you to send emails and notices to all of the group members, post your Active Rain blog entries and so much more.

The "Oakhurst News, Entertainment and Real Estate Group" has only been around for about two months, but more than 40 people have joined -- without me even promoting the web page!

If you're interested in establishing a neighborhood or community page for your area, there are just a few simple steps:

1)  From your main Facebook Home page, go to the "Applications" menu (on the right side of the page)

2) Select "Groups"

3)  A new page will open up and at the top you will see a button called "Create a new Group"Create a new group on Facebook

4) Once you click on the link, you just have to fill out a short form -- Group name, description, group type, etc.  In the true Facebook fashion, you can send a notice out to your Facebook Friends and ask that they join the group.

HAVE FUN & LET ME KNOW HOW YOUR NEW FACEBOOK GROUP IS WORKING FOR YOU.  Also, if you have any other creative things you do on Facebook, please share!

Hi Kerry!  I'm going to bookmark you on this one as I'm doing a bit of revisions in my online marketing and this is one of the areas that I really need to attack!  I have a facebook acct. set up and do participate minimally but, haven't added any of my listings and REALLY need to do that.  Thanks for sharing your Facebook knowledge and best of luck on your Mulligan! ;-)

Thanks, Debe!  I've set up two community sites so far and one is really taking off -- I'm having fun with it and also getting a few (long term) leads.

Hi Kerry,

If I make a community page for local Realtors to join, are they kept separately from my 'friends' list?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Kerry, I curious as to how the 40 group members found the group without you promoting the group. Any insight on that?

Also neighborhood group sounds like a great idea

@ Georgina -- That's great!  My neighborhood page now has just a little over 100 -- even local (competing) real estate brokers joined the page, so I'm curious to see how this works out long term.  Please keep me updated on your progress and have a great 2009!

@ Lori -- I'm glad you have your business page up and running, that is important.  The community pages usually only take about 10 minutes to create and if you really try to find that niche market or small community, they tend to be more successful than the broad categories like "New York Real Estate" and "First time home buyers in California".  Best of luck to you!

this is a great idea for those of us who have geographic farms! Do you think that it is counterproductive to have more than one geographic neighborhood page each one focused on a different community?

Lise -- Not at all!  I have three neighborhood groups on Facebook and it's been great.  My only recommendation would be that you know the neighborhoods / communities pretty well, so you can keep everyone updated on the latest events, home sales, community concerns, etc.  I'm always trying to think of new things to keep it interesting.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Trisha!  I would put your website info on the page -- it will help drive traffic to your website, allow buyers and sellers to find out a bit more about you, etc.  Best of luck to you!

Did you form your page as a group or neighborhood and whichever one you did, why?

I realize your idea here is old, but I am new to Acitverain and searched for how to create a FB Group for Neighborhoods and found this...thanks so much for the help.  I am going to set this up, but was hoping to also give my neighbors information that they all want to know about the market... sales data, etc. but am reluctant to post past sales info, since new neighbors moving in may not want the price they paid broadcast on the internet (even though it's public record anyway, and already on the net if you know where to look).  I know agents who mail the data out and homeowners like getting it.  What's your opinion on putting this type of data on the FB group page?
