Silver Alerts in Florida

Did you know that Florida has now started Silver Alerts? No, neither did I. I was driving on the Florida Turnpike yesterday when I saw the Silver alert on the main dashboard where they usually state whether or not there are accidents or where they display if there is an amber alert. So when I saw silver I was a bit confused.

Today in the paper it went on to explain what a Silver Alert is. I was very happy to hear it. As you might know that a lot of people retire here. Well we also have a great deal of people with Alzheimer'. Many are in assisted living facilities. But sometimes they get out and since they are already confused and they get lost.

So it turns out that Gov. Charlie Christ started this and has gone active as of October 8 and has been used twice, both times finding the person missing. Glad to hear it.

Here is a short clip from the article, or you can read it here.

The new program, started Oct. 8 by Gov. Charlie Crist, is designed to help find missing people with cognitive disabilities or dementia. Similar to Amber Alerts, which publicize cases involving missing and endangered children, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement sends out Silver Alerts to law enforcement agencies and media organizations to notify the public. And if, as in William Hall's case, the person goes missing in a vehicle, the state will flash alerts on electronic billboards along major highways.

Jeanette,

Thanks for the post. Great use of an existing idea. The new twist will assist many in ensuring the safety of some of the most vulnerable.

Richard Your welcome. I was so confused when I saw it yesterday and understood when I read the paper. I don't remember seeing it on the news either.

Jeanette,

That sounds like a good idea.  I love your state and it is so sad to see so many people out of work these days.  Off topic......it seems like Gov Crist is doing a good job?

I was just coming home from Ormona Beach going to Port Orange.

The amber alert sign said "Silver Alert" But it was too late to see

what else it said!! There should be another board soon after to

let people finish reading who to look out for!! I hope whoever

they are looking for is found very soon!!! Thanks, Marci
