Real estate is a profession that chose me, and I’m so glad it did!

Why do I love it so?

  • Every day is different.  I never know ahead of time what it’s going to look like, and a phone call or chance meeting can open the door to something new and exciting.
  • It’s all about the relationships.   In my case, many personal friendships have led to real estate transactions, and many new friendships started out as new clients.
  • I have a lot of control over my own destiny.  Sure, stuff happens that is beyond my control, although I have pretty much total control over how I react to it.
  • There are many choices among business models.  And the choices are mine to make.  I can work in whatever price range, I can provide whatever levels of service, and I can alter my business model to fit changes in the market place.
  • I am the boss of me!  Well, perhaps if anyone is my boss, it’s the clients who use my services.  But there is not much that my broker does to dictate what I do, how I dress or how I behave, as long as I obey the law (which she didn’t make up).  Of course, there is a certain expectation that I’ll look, act and be professional, and I enjoy working in an office where that is the norm.  But in terms of how much I work and what projects I take on, the choice is mine.  And being a little control freak, I really love this!
  • After all these years, I am in the best place possible in terms of my broker.  Donna Evers, the owner and principal broker at Evers &; Company is amazing.   And maybe it was important to experience less than amazing companies to totally appreciate what she has created for her agents.
  • I can go shopping when everyone else is sitting behind a desk at some office downtown!  I don’t have to fight the crowds, at Bloomingdale’s or at the grocery store!
  • This gig is really fun - at least most of the time.  There are a few days when it temporarily sucks, but often, I have to pinch myself as I’m reminded that I actually get real, green money for doing this.
  • Over the years, I’ve gotten good at it!  (Gee, Pat!  You are so humble!)  And maybe that’s what makes it fun.
  • I have a lot of freedom to pursue other stuff I enjoy.   That would be playing the flute and writing - my little blogging addition!.

When I began in this business in 1983, it was sort of an accident.  I had a political job, and my guy lost his bid for a second term.  I had no clearly identifiably marketable skills.    I was a government consumer advocate and a Democrat with a bachelor’s degree in flute.   I couldn’t go back to work for Ralph Nader because I had a mortgage and he didn’t pay enough for me pay my lender.   And when Shannon &; Luchs, my first brokerage, actually wanted me, pursued me, and hounded me into this unlikely career change, It seemed like a good idea - although I didn’t have any other options!

After 25 years of challenges and goofy markets, I’m glad that real estate found me.

And, I hereby tag Fran Gaspari and Todd Clark!

Hi Pat.  Thanks for reblogging this post.  I wish I would have written it.  It sums up the way I feel to.

Thanks again,

Ken
