Managing Your Time as a Professional

I wanted to share a bit about how I have learned to manage my time. Not that I am the expert or anything, but I have learned a few things throughout the years.

 I used to be all over the place in answering calls and email, etc. at any time of day. For some people, that works. But, I have to say that tired me out quite a bit and got me frazzled. I have always taken off Sundays and reserved it for church and family time. And, I like to enjoy Saturdays with my family when I am not showing buyers homes for sale. I find that I am re-energized for the week when I do something different than work.

 Now, on to what I really want to share with you......Training your clients! Clients need to know that you run a business, and that you are not primarily available at 11:00 at night. For me, I am not at the top of my game late at night.....and I don't want to be talking Real Estate late at night. I do have a life besides work! And, I am sure that you do, too. I have determined that I will be available by phone from 8am until 6pm Monday through Friday and available on the weekends by appointment. So, I left my business hours on my cell phone voice message. Clients will start to understand that I will work very hard for them during business hours. If they call after business hours, I will return their call promptly the next morning. As for email, I stop checking my email after 7pm and turn my phone and computer off! We deserve that time off. Believe me, I can function very well and get the job done during those hours.

 Don't get me wrong, I am huge on Customer Service and Satisfaction. I am just saying that we as professionals have a life besides business. In fact, you will find that you are more productive and better at what you do if you allow some other things into your life besides just working.

I work alot and when Im off Im off. I will call agents back on my listings 24/7 but my buyer clients and leads have to wait. Anyone I have a contract with gets a email of my availability schedule twice a week.

I totally agree.  People need to respect your personal time. Now if I could only drag myself away from my laptop at night and go to sleep!!

I agree -- it is about training our client base.    They respect those who set parameters.     We are the professionals, in charge, right?

Prior to getting into Real Estate, I watched many realtor's marriages destroyed by the 24/7 job.  When I began, I too trained my clients to respect business hours unless it was an absolute emergency.  It has worked wonderfully and my husband is very happy with this decision :0)

I think this is a timely post as well, considering many agents are desperate for business.  Continue to have your clients respect you and your time.
