Painted Paneling B&A Photos!

I recently asked the question What Would You Do In This Space?  about a dark, paneled space that I encouraged the sellers to paint.  Thankfully they were on board with that recommendation.  I staged the room as I originally wanted, as a sitting room, not a dining space.  These pictures show the power of paint to freshen up an outdated room!  Unfortunately, the trim and woodwork was not painted white as I suggested (that will need to be fixed) but I still think the transformation is tremendous.  The color used is Sherwin Williams Softer Tan SW6141.

Juliet - "if it doesn't move it should be painted"  I like that line!

Terry - I've discovered there are many out there like you that feel that way. This wasn't even nice wood, just dark and depressing.

Robyn, Laurie - Thank you!

Maureen - I sure hope so!  They hired a painter so I'm sure he did... but since he didn't do the trim like I recommended.... hummm... makes me wonder?

Cathy - Thanks, it feels less like "grandma's house" now.

Kym - In houses that I think desperately need painting, if they are against it, I prefer not to stage it.  Haven't tried ProGreen... will check it out, thanks.

Terrylynn - Fresh, light and open is what the buyers want, right?  When was the last time you heard a buyer say I'm looking for a house with dark, dated paneling?  Thanks for commenting

Just absolutely amazing!     This home now looks like a real charmer.   You did a wonderful job.   The owners must be so proud.

Beautiful color and excellent recommendation to paint!  You shaved twenty years off this house!

Connie - Thank you. Yes the owner was quite pleased.  At first he saw the room painted without the furnishings and was a bit worried it was just a bunch of "beige" but once it was put together he loved it.

Kristina - Now I wish we could shave twenty years off some other parts of the house (bathrooms!).

Virginia - keep them for next time you need to convince a seller! I wish I had them a long time ago too!

Absolutely amazing transformation!  The space is so much lighter and brighter.  I love Jackson's idea of bookmarking and using these photos as an example for clients questioning the results of painting their paneling.  Great choice on staging it as a sitting room - so comfy with the fireplace and all!

Phenomenal transformation, Judy -- I'll bet the homeowners wished they had done it earlier! And personally I think it worked out just fine having the same color on the trim. Great work!  Leslie

I hate this old paneling, the new color really lightens up the room, especially with the light colored furniture.  Great job!

I have only one room with paneling (Thank Goodness). I've always wanted to paint over the paneling because the room felt out of line with the other rooms. Your images totally sold me; I will paint soon, the only thing I can say now, is that I wish I'd done it years ago!  Many thanks for sharing these pictures.

Beautiful, what an amazing difference some paint can make.  So light and airy now, more modern and looking like a show home.

I LOVE your photos!  We were trying to figure out how to paint our paneling, and this color is perfect.

Question:  With the Sherwin Williams Softer Tan, which of their white colors would you have chosen for the trim?  There are so many to choose from.

Thanks.

Judie, et al....

How do you prep, process and paint the dated wood paneling?

Steps...

1) wash/scrub paneling (remove dirt, grease, etc.)
2) lightly sand paneling
3) prime paneling
4) paint paneling

Anything else?

Diane - I've never personally painted the paneling, we hire professionals for the work.  But I would assume you've got the process down correctly... anyone else have anything to add???

I am reblogging this so I can point some clients to these pictures.  While some may still like the dark paneling, most do not.  I have one on the market with it- maybe seeing these pictures will either help encourage someone to buy or for the seller to paint.

Christine and Jennifer - Thanks and I hope it helps.  It really is such a minimal investment for such a huge return!

Looks fabulous! I was wondering of Kathy P's and Jackson W's pictures (at the top) are for real? Or a joke? What a couple of goof balls!
