Stories Behind The Music: Phil Spector and His Teddy Bears

By

One of the legendary men of rock music is Phil Spector. During his career he had some major accomplishments in music. A few weeks back I wrote a post on probably the most famous of those accomplishments. That article was called Phil Spector's wall of sound.

I made an amusing discovery the other day, that provided me with interesting information on the man. Spector, who graduated from high school in 1958, almost immediately set about making a name for himself in the music business. Obviously, he did not start off as a high-powered producer. He started off as a band member and Spector penned a song that become a number one chart topper on December 1, 1958.

The title of the song was taken from the inscription on his own father's tombstone "To Know Him Was to Love Him."

As many of you know, in a high-profile case, Spector was charged with murder of a woman a few years ago. There was a hung jury after the first trial. A re-trial is planned, according to the media.

If you click on Spector's mug shot below, you will be taken back to 1958 and you will see another side of this man -- a young and innocent looking songwriter and first-time producer making music with his 15 year old friend Annette Kleinbard and another boy named Marshall Leib. Spector is the teddy bear on the right.

Check out "This Day In History" -- music and vintage television from the 1950's through the 1980's.  I enjoy writing these articles because they take me back to my days in radio broadcasting. Click on Elvis' gold record, below, to revisit those golden hits of yesteryear.

Sooooo, What do we think the outcome of the new trial will be on Mr. Spector?

He looks a little "nutty" to me.

Sean,

Not such a flattering photo. However, probably I have never seen a flattering mug shot. No clue on the trial.

Another good history even though the song was kinda boring.  He turned from a teddy bear to a wild animal, I guess.

Steven:  What a treat.  To watch and listen to the Teddy Bears singing a song that meant so much to me in the 50's.  I can remember dancing to it at the high school mixers.  I did not know Phil Spector was a Teddy Bear.  Thanks for sharing.

The same website that had To Know Him Is To Love Him... had Once in A While by the Chimes.  Honesty, Steven, if I could climb into the website through my monitor and live there... I would do it in a minute.  Thanks again.
