I have a CONFESSION to Make (3 lessons learned in my first week on Active Rain)

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Possibility.ca

What a thrill ride my first week on Active Rain has been...a full range of ups and downs. First let me get my confession out of the way so I can clear my head space...then I'll share a valuable lesson I've learned in my first week on Active Rain.

To anyone who actually clicked on my 4th post (4 Simple Truths about Change) - I have a confession to make. It's not good...(as if you didn't already know that)...and I apologize.  The good news is that I see what went wrong...

I wrote my first 3 posts on Active Rain from my heart...the 4th I wrote from my head. I get the difference it makes to you, the reader, and for me as the writer.  HUGE!

Write from the heart

My first post on Active Rain - Our Life Changing Trip to Tsunami Ravaged Indonesia

This was a story, a personal experience, I was excited to write. I learned patience (for my technical incompetence)...and how to upload photos. I received generous amounts of encouragement from you. It was a pleasurable experience for me.

When does individual private email become spam? My second post on AR

This was a cry for help to "the universe"...not knowing what I'd done wrong in responding to people's comments...uncertain where to find information...or even what to search for. The "AR universe" responded with practical tips and understanding in generous proportions. I was very impressed (I think I was expecting a slap on the wrist and harsh words about my IQ).

The 10 Most ADMIRABLE characteristics of a real estate PROFESSIONAL

The comments I'd received from readers in response to my first two posts inspired me to write this. It is a compilation of all the characterstics I experienced through the Active Rain community. It was a spontaneous, natural expression. When I started to receive congratulations for being "featured" I had no idea what people were talking about.  When Liz taught me how to review my stats I sure noticed a spike in clicks, views and comments as a result of being featured.

The koodos I received made me feel like the bar had somehow been raised...now I should strive to do a good job. I got all brainy about it. My 4th post was something to be worked on. That's why 4 Simple Truths About CHANGE is not an interesting read. The content is sound but the expression is dry.

My advise to Newbies is this -

  1. Always write from your HEART as if you're talking and sharing with your best friend around the kitchen table...
  2. The best way to get to know people is to visit the blogs/profiles of the people who comment on your blog. Like attracts like so the experienced bloggers will find you and draw you into conversation through their comments.
  3. If you really want to improve your traffic and visibility - ask at least one person whose opinion your respect to give you honest feedback on your posts. Then shut up and listen!

 Brain

In my first week on Active Rain I discovered WHY so many people love it here!  Not only do we GET TO BE OURSELVES here...the interaction only really works when we ARE BEING OURSELVES!

What a cool community!

Tana

Tana, ok, here goes. Go ahead and read my posts. I'm nervous, but love the feedback. There aren't many, but they are varied. I'm holding my breath.

Anyone else interested in commenting? I open my door/post to anyone who wants. I'm feeling brave.

Thanks Tana, for the suggestions! I signed up quite awhile back but "life" took me mostly out of circulation for about 2 years. More about that another time. I am rebuliding my real estate land personal life. I decided since I've spent a year mourning, it was time to just get on with it and the real estate that I have so enjoyed since 1973. (Yes, I started yourg... too young to know it was a terrible time, so I succeeded anyway.) Got my AR today and decided to get off the sidelines. Saw your post and it spoke to me as I was thinking "Where do I start???" Thanks for sharing while you are learning. You are an inspriration!  Have a sunny day! Pat Argo, CRS

For being so new to AR, you sure sound like an experience veteran, and are garnering a lot of attention.  I have already learned something from you.  Keep it up.

Pat

I'm glad that you are venturing back into your life and rekindling your passion for real estate. Loss really takes the wind out of a person's sails.  Your resiliance makes a difference to other people - like me and other users on Active Rain - who are yet to get to know you. :-) My advise is this...don't save your blogging for only those days when you are feeling "up". This is a community where you can share from your heart (the good, the bad and yes, even the ugly). You are never alone.

Welcome back!

Tana

Troy, Joseph & Melody - I wrote you each separate notes (in one comment window) and LOST IT before hitting submit. Man I hate when that happens!!! It's not the first time either. I can't help it if I like to skip around and read people's blogs before responding. Sheesh!

Melody - I'm an avid reader too. I was checking out some of your book reviews when I lost track of my comment here and lost it.

Joe - I love your tagline "not your average Joe". Now that's memorable! :-)

Troy - I'm no veteran but this Active Rain thing has definitley stoked by fire! My brain is short circuiting. I've watched videos, learned great tips, laughed and cried reading people's blogs. I find myself thinking about blogs to write and snappy headings to try. Hopefully tomorrow I will find time to write.

I had more to say the first time I wrote but now it's time to tuck my kids into bed. Good night!

Christine - thanks. My learning curve stalled out on me this week but I'm back at it now!

Leesa - Nice to see you again oh wise and experienced one. Thanks for the continued encouragement.

Rob - Just swing out there and don't be afraid to mess up (that's where some of our my best learning happens).

Kathy - I came on fast and furious in my first week...then I became overwhelmed and confused. I had to take my second week off.  Now I'm going to practice "moderation" whatever that means.

Gary - blogging, websites, twitter, facebook...where do you begin?
