I know, I know. Shop 'til you drop! Stand in line for 4 hours to get that toy, gizmo, whatever is hot. Support the economy! Well, here in Minnesota, it's cold, man. I mean toe-numbing cold on this November morning! For several years, in November, I would stand in line early in the morning to garner a CD put out by a local radio stations of original songs by some famous folks. It was for charity and there were only X number of copies. (If you didn't get a ripped-off copy from one of your friends. Side note: I used to work for a law firm in intellectual property area, and even if I hadn't had that experience, I believe that my moral fiber would not allow be to dabble in such ickiness.) I always made friends in line, we had a common purpose and it was for charity. I usually saw some old friends, and I almost always made a contact for my real estate business somewhere in there. Someone would hold a place in line for someone who would run to the local coffeehouse for some nice caffeine to keep us all warm (at least our hands). This is true Minnesota nice! But, older and wiser, the day after Thanksgiving seems to be to be the day to rest, relax and reflect on the previous day. Now, if you feel the need, please be my guest. It tickles me no end to see you all out there, steam coming from your mouths, all anticipating getting into the big box. What I find somewhat disturbing is your complete lack of manners and humanity. Pushing and shoving...hell-bent on being the Victor. I'll let the commercialism pass me by. I want our economy strong again, but I also want my friends and neighbors to stay in their homes, feed their families and continue in business. So this year, as in years past, I will buy the few things I need for a comfortable and fiscally-sane Christmas here in my backyard. It seems to me to be the right thing to do. Especially now.
