My Plans for Black Friday-No Lines for Me!

By
Real Estate Agent with Sabinske & Associates, Inc. (Albertville, St. Michael)
I know, I know. Shop 'til you drop! Stand in line for 4 hours to get that toy, gizmo, whatever is hot. Support the economy! Well, here in Minnesota, it's cold, man. I mean toe-numbing cold on this November morning! For several years, in November, I would stand in line early in the morning to garner a CD put out by a local radio stations of original songs by some famous folks. It was for charity and there were only X number of copies. (If you didn't get a ripped-off copy from one of your friends. Side note: I used to work for a law firm in intellectual property area, and even if I hadn't had that experience, I believe that my moral fiber would not allow be to dabble in such ickiness.) I always made friends in line, we had a common purpose and it was for charity. I usually saw some old friends, and I almost always made a contact for my real estate business somewhere in there. Someone would hold a place in line for someone who would run to the local coffeehouse for some nice caffeine to keep us all warm (at least our hands). This is true Minnesota nice! But, older and wiser, the day after Thanksgiving seems to be to be the day to rest, relax and reflect on the previous day. Now, if you feel the need, please be my guest. It tickles me no end to see you all out there, steam coming from your mouths, all anticipating getting into the big box. What I find somewhat disturbing is your complete lack of manners and humanity. Pushing and shoving...hell-bent on being the Victor. I'll let the commercialism pass me by. I want our economy strong again, but I also want my friends and neighbors to stay in their homes, feed their families and continue in business. So this year, as in years past, I will buy the few things I need for a comfortable and fiscally-sane Christmas here in my backyard. It seems to me to be the right thing to do. Especially now.

Living in small-town America has its advantages.  My wife has already gone this morning, done whatever it is she does and is now back in bed.

She does this because there is someone on her list that she is thinking of.  I personally can't tolerate the masses.  It takes a brave person to venture out in the shopping madness.

I went to school in River Falls...just across the border....we used to say to the many folks from Minnesota that we hoped summer came on a weekend that year....though I can't say southeastern Wisconsin is sooo much warmer. The internet has taken all of the fun out of sliding thru the parking lot,....thank goodness !  Happy holidays !

Sounds very good to me Suzanne!  I'm here in Ocala Florida and I might need a light jacket for the morning hours but it will warm up later BUT I STILL AM NOT GOING TO STAND IN LINE!  For that matter I'm not shopping at all today.  :-)

My wife and 16 year old got up at 5am and went to the mall. This is the first time they have done this and they are having a blast!!! I think it's more fun since they aren't looking for anything specific!

Hi Suzanne:

I'm working as usual...no time for the malls!

I heard on the radio that the stores are packed...I'll pass!

Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving,

My wife ran out at 3am this morning to WalMart to buy a Black Friday special on a Garmin navigation system. I guess this isn't much different than the 3 hours I spent last night online looking for a GREAT DEAL on a new computer(whic I found by the way!).

I live in a very small town miles from malls no lines here... anyone wishing to be at the mall when the stores opened this morning would of had to get up around 2AM and leave by 3 for a 5 Am opening....

I grew up in a small town myself and have always preferred to keep my purchases local.  I probably dont get to a mall more than once every few years.  It's too bad that over the years many local stores have been replaced with larger chain stores.

As far as black friday goes.... have to work so never have done that one either.  Happy holidays.

I always pass on Black Friday. Bunch of hype and hysteria, but I know many people love it! I bet there will be even better sales prices in a few weeks...

Suazanne---I couldn't agree more----all that "pushing and shoving" as part of the "meaning of Christmas" is exactly why I am already waiting for Thanksgiving:)

Ditto that on passing the mall rush.  But here in the mountain hinderland -pop. 950 folks in La Veta - we are still tempted to run into the city to spend the day and pick up some deals. .  Is there a "Black Friday" for real estate Buyers?

Suzanne- well said, I could not agree with you more. I will be going out today to "shop" but only to Home Depot and that is because I need rock salt for my water treatment system, otherwise I would be staying clear of stores. All this hipe about "Black Friday" and shopping at 3:00 a.m. is nuts, people need to get a grip!

You didn't and won't find me shopping. I do not like to shop to begin with so to go through all the madness AND get up that early - uh - no thanks...  I'll stay right here - off to work for a few and then home.

Suzanne,

thanks for the post. I have never and will never participate in the Black Friday Fiasco. Look live internet shopping, it is the greatest.
