Very pretty photo.  I am amazed at how close you got and the little bird isn't freaking out.

Between a telephoto lens and this little guy being focused on our hummingbird feeder, I doubt he ever knew I was there. You should have seen him trying to eat out of the hummingbird feeder though - pretty funny.

Is it always that fluffy or is it trying to look big?  Is there a female nearby or is he trying to scare you away?

Doreen - I think it was a young bird, and was just that fluffy. It had no idea I was near. The picture was taken with a telephoto lens.

You know how birds will sometimes 'ruffle' the feathers and look twice as big?  That's what I was thinking.  If it's a baby, it has softer and fluffier feathers, right?

Tim,

Talk about close-up. That is a great, full-frame shot. Great color also. Thanks. :)

Tim, what size zoom lens did you use for this photo?  We got my daughter a new SLR digital camera for Christmas and she would like to get a zoom lens.  I'm just wondering what would be good zoom dimensions for her camera?  Thanks for the beautiful photo, and Happy New Year, Sallie

The photo was taken with a Canon Digital Rebel EOS with an 80-300 mm zoom. I was about 10 feet away from the bird when I took the picture.

What wonderful colors on this bird.  I believe that I had one on my feeder last winter.  So beautiful.

What a great shot!  Unfortunately, I must have my screen settings screwed up because I can't display a picture that big all at once.

Maybe I need two screens.

Maybe the picture should be resized to the internet standard of 640 x 480.

What a wonderful shot!  His feathers almost look "groomed"...I know birds groom themselves, but his feathers look "Farrah Fawcett layered"
