Strolling Down Memory Lane

The friendship and good vibes here at Active Rain remind me a little of the old REX forum on Compuserve.  REX stood for Real Estate Exchange, it was created by C.A.R. (California Association of Realtors) but brokers and agents from all over the USA  joined in the discussions.

And what was often the subject of those discussions back in '95 and '96 was RIN, Realtors Information Network, and the 12-15 million spent by NAR to develop a system that never got off the ground.  RIN was going to be a national, internet based network for realtors, with property listings and maps.  Hmmm. Listings. Maps. Sound familiar?

Looking back at RIN, it appears that people at NAR realized that the internet was going to be a "really big deal", and they wanted to do something to get a handle on the internet.  Somehow, they just didn't get it quite right.

I googled for RIN Realtors Information Network and found several articles are still available about it:

Some of the youngsters here will probably trip out reading about how things were in the "old days".

Everyone might also be relieved to learn that NAR not only recouped that "12-15 million" but actually turned a profit of several tens of millions of dollars from the sale of their HomeStore stock they got for the licensing rights to Realtor.com.

A classic case of being in the right place at the right time.

Yes!  Thanks for adding that the loss was recouped!

The thing that I find so interesting is that, looking from the perspective of where we're at now...  the basic idea of RIN wasn't all that far off the mark.  RIN will stand as a classic case of not quite the right place at not quite the right time.  :-)

Caution: CAT BLOG AHEAD

Including random thoughts on life, art, business, stuff, and occasionally Real Estate.

What is a CAT BLOG?

According to Seth Godin: "Cat blogs are for, by, and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever else you feel like sharing in your public diary."

Well, I am the boss, my dating years are behind me, but I do love my cats.

Enjoy!
