New Website, please critique

By
Home Inspector with Comprehensive Building Inspections & Consultants

I finally got my website up and running. I would love some feedback. I'm still "tweeking" it. I hope to be done soon, maybe it will never be done.

I have no problem with constructive critisism. Someone told me my font was too small, what do you think?

Check out the gallery.

Hey Don,

How's the fishing where you are? You should check out Inspectorsites.com Say hello to Greg for me.

Bob, Thank you for enlightening me. I checked it out and learned about things that I didn't know existed. I am working on adjustments.

Hi Sally,

Thank you for the help. Do you think I should make all of the font the same throughout?

I was just reading you week in review. Good blog, I'm going back there now, there was something I was reading.

Gary,

I checked out your site and am impressed. Very unique, pretty good for a DIY. Eventually, I want to build my own, so I may go to Yahoo and play.

Thanks,

-Steve

I would suggest that you incorporate your phone number onto your header graphic to make it easy for visitors who find your website to be able to call you quickly without having to spend time going all through your site to get a phone number to be able to reach you. Just my 2 cents.

I would get rid of your fee scale on the site.  This takes away a reason for a person to call you.  Once you get them on the phone you will have a better chance on selling them on your service.

Steve,

Your site is "pretty" It is full of useful information.  Personally, I would not give that info away.  For Instance, I would make the visitor give their name & email address to view your sample report.

All of the "useful information" I would do the same.  Consider a box that says "Free report on Asbestos"

Then capture the visitors name and email address.

Also, where are your testimonials? IMO,  Client Testimonials are the most powerful marketing.

Hi Lawrence,

Thanks for the feedback. I think the idea of getting email address' is brilliant!

I do have some testimonials that i will post, I have a number of other pages to post also. It's just that Between being extremely busy at work, My computer being down (I'm on my son;s laptop right now and hate using a laptop) and needing a website building rest for a few days, I haven't gotten around to getting it done yet. My computer should be up this weekend.

Just catching up and agree with Scott that putting your fee is a bad idea and a disservice to you and your client.

When you hold yourself to a set sq foot fee you are not taking into account many factors that may cause you to raise or lower your fee with different situations.

So one of you may not be pleased either way.

Plus who in the heck wants to deal with somebody so dumb they would price shop Home Inspectors on a $500.000 home.Gee I saved $50 on my inspection, must be a genius.

The guy was so good he finished in 20 minutes. DUH! .

Steven T,

Your site is decent and looks professional. The advice about having testimonials is good if you do them properly and have them signed so they are credible. Hopefully, your customers will tell a story or two about what you found that prevented them from making a costly mistake or won them a valuable concession in the negotiations over the price of the house. The more specific the better.

I would not ask for an email address to view a sample report. What are you going to do with it once you have it?

As a potential customer, it's annoying as hell to be asked for that info just to evaluate your service.

The language of the site is generic and does not convey what is unique or special about your service. It's great that you belong to an inspector's organization, but you should explain what is required to earn the credential and what background you have that qualifies you to inspect homes. Were you a general contractor? Did you spend 15 years working in facilities maintenance? Whatever your special background and qualifications, you should share them.

The best thing you could do is to look at your business from the other side of the table. What would you need to know to hire you? What would you want to know? What could you provide that would make someone call? Why should the hire you versus the next guy (or gal)?

Best of luck

Eric

Eric,

Thanks for the feedback.

Most of what you see is generic. This site is a "ready to use, out of the box site" from the company that I am using. I did have them somewhat customize the template and now I am rewriting all of the content.

The testimonials that I will be posting are all signed and on letterheads. Very few are inspection related, most are from hospitals or residential clients that I have done work for. Some are from community organizations, some are from local politicians, etc. None shall be "He was great, Lewis from St. Louis".

I never follow my own advice, but one thing to remember is most people whom go to your site probably could care less about all the tech garbage.

Yes I say garbage because these people are on a timer.

All they want is a qualified Home Inspector.(Fast)

They are looking to buy the home of their dreams, not get trained for Home Inspection.

Hey Steve,

Nice site, glad to see you went with Greg. The only suggestion I would have is to change your sample report to a local report that you have prepared. Just change all the names and locations to bogus, for example, change client name Fred Duemig to client name John Sample, change inspection address from Massapequa to anytown. Also, use systems from three or four reports, for example, use the front section from inspection 1, the electrical from inspection 2, the plumbing from inspection 3, etc. All of this protects confidentiality and also gives you a nice sample of your work.

Good luck,

Fred

Steve,

I would not ask for a name and address prior to seeing a sample report either. Many times, a client calls me because of the sample report. Also, many times when I have a client on the phone I direct them to the sample to explain it and discuss.
